Wicklow / Re: Anthony Sutton
« on: Saturday 03 September 11 14:11 BST (UK) »Thank you for your research and thinking of the possibility regarding Anthony Sutton.
What we have been trying to discover:
Who were Anthony's parents in Ireland
Where are he and his wife Betsey buried in Canada
Our Anthony was born in 1803, but January 11, not the date your Arnold was born. We have that on a number of documents. And yes he did marry Elizabeth (Betsey) Gilbert but his Betsey was but 17 (b Feb 5, 1820) when they were married on July 20 1837. They had 8 children and Betsey died giving birth to the 8th child, Elsie in 1859.
However another relative Basil Sutton still with us and living in Ontario Canada believes that Anthony's father could have been named Thomas and his mother may have been Mary, both of Wicklow where Anthony was born.
Basil also believes that Anthony's sister may have been Annie and two brothers were Thomas and John. We know that Anthony emigrated to Canada the same year as Annie and John. Anthony went to Southwold Ontario in 1818 when he was just 15 years of age.
The following is verbatim from Basil Sutton and since you are so familiar with Wicklow it may give you (or others reading this )an idea.
Basil Sutton writes:
"Annie Sutton
Annie Sutton and her older brother John emigrated from Glasnamullen, County Wicklow in 1818 (same time as Anthony)and came to Montreal where Annie stayed while John went to New York. John then went to Southwold township and sent for Annie. The article states that Annie’s father was a surgeon.
Annie Sutton married Thomas Sharon. They had a farm on the west side of Frome.
Thomas' brother Hugh, owned the farm beside them. Annie taught school at Frome for many years. Annie and Thomas are buried in the Frome United Church cemetery. She lived to be 88 and Thomas was 89 when he died.
Thomas Sutton, a bachelor brother came over later and settled in Southwold
John Sutton
John Sutton with a wife and 7 children settled on Lot 21 on April 12, 1814. His wife died soon after at age 31 and is buried on his farm part of which later became the south part of the Frome United Church cemetery.
John later married Catherine A Halls who was 25 years younger than him
His son John Wesley, married Dolphine ? and carried on the farm and their son Harnum W, married Mary A Charlston in St Thomas"
I am wondering if this information may give someone a clue.
Thank you so much for thinking of this and to all who may help in our quest. Lee R
