Hi I have a brick wall also , trying to find my gggggrandfather James Stephen /Steven his son William born in Angus 1790s .
Came across James Steven married to Jean Teviotdale 03-02-1788 their family Jean born 1789, Mady born 1791, James born 1793, William born 1795, and David born 1799. In Craig in Forfarshire.
Do you have any information on James the father ie his occupation? or any other information on the family .

Hi Everyone,
Last time I was on was 2011, how time passes ,but no more further , with the lockdown thought I would look at the tree again .

Found out that William was born 1791/2 not 1797 as worked out with the census ( one lady told me the people taking the census rounded up their age to the nearest five after the age of 15 ) .

Found his gravestone in Aberdeen Nellfield cemetery which read, died 1st May 1869 aged 78,so going on that looked up William Stephen born 1791/2 Angus , father James, and two came up which matched one of the Roots chat findings William Steven b 18 Feb 1792, c 24 Feb 1792 Arbroath Angus. And the other William Steven b 10 June 1791 Dundee Angus both fathers James .

Found his death in the Dundee Courier / Daily Argus and Aberdeen Press and Journal ( contacted the archive man in the Courier and he said that the deaths were in the two papers was so the person doing the will would cover family in Dundee Forfarshire Angus area ) .
But now that as I am still a rookie, and still that brick wall . someday though

"Thanks for your help but Williams parents on Scotlands Peop in 1799 are David Stephen & Jean Kerr, on his death cert is James but no mothers name, dont think it is him. Have you ever got a geneoligist to help with your searching when you hit a brick wall and are they costly"

Some more to add to the confusion

William Stephen b 10 JUN 1791,    Dundee, Angus, Scotland, James Stephen / Helen Lawson
William Stephen b 24 Jan or Feb 1792, Arbroath, Angus, Scotland, James Stephen /  Margaret  Petrie 2 date conflicting records
William Stephen b 28 Nov 1795  Craig By Montrose, Angus, Scotland, James Stephen / Jean Teviotdale
William Stephen b 14 Jan 1799  Barry, Angus, Scotland, James Stephen / Mary Scott

Hi Malky

2011 was the last time I was on , bored during lockdown  looked at tree again , think you were spot on with the first two as William died 1st May 1869 aged 78 ,so makes his birth 1791/2 , spoke to a lady and she said the census was taken and they rounded it up to the nearest five years after the age of 15 .
Also contacted a man at the Dundee Courier where Williams death was published as well as the Aberdeen Press and Journal as he died and buried in Aberdeen ,he said that the person carrying out the will would have put the death in the two publications as to capture any family in the Dundee Forfarshire Angus area.
Searched for a will but could not find one , just one for his wife Isabella .
Can not get a link to match my William with the first two you mentioned, I see the 1792 William was christened on 24 Feb 1792 Arbroath Angus .
Have run out of options again ,one day maybe one day.

Hi Cus
I have only started the tree and went off like a rocket and then hit the William brick wall, it is a shame because i was doing so well , i am 53 and stay in Peterhead, looking at the tree most of our relations are or were scattered around Aberdeenshire Newhills, Skene, and quite a lot in the city its self.
