Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: St George Pill Parish records - ANSTICE
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Thomas and Sarah Anstice are on 1891 census with Ethel, 8, Lilian 6. William 4, and George 10mnths. They are at 21 Upper Adelaide St Newport.  There seem to have been loads of Anstices all around the Pill area of Newport.  My grandparents, great uncle and parents were still active in a church on Mountjoy St. when I was growing up in Newport.

Thanks for your message. Yes this is the same family. I am descended from Thomas George's brother Wm., who is my great grandfather.  I have been working on the Anstice family on and off for a few years but have been limited to online resources because, although I originate from Newport I am no longer living locally. If you would like to contact me on

A number of my Anstice ancestors moved from Pill St George where they were mariners/pilots to Newport at about the same time. One of the family was listed as a dockmaster and others as mariners. I assume they sailed across! I can remember trips being available by boat from Newport to Ilfracombe and I think to Weston or Clevedon as well, though I am less certain of that. Janet.

Hello Ian, I have contacted the Pill project in Newport to see if they have any more detail on Wm.  I am descended from a Charles Anstice b. 1769 in Pill Somerset through his son Charles b.1802. I wonder if your William was related to either of these but I think the only way to find out will be if someone is local and can check Parish Records. I know some are on the internet but I can't find anything relevant there yet. I'll stay in touch if I have any success. Janet

I am also connected to Anstice family, some of whom are described on census as channel pilots. A contact mentionned a list of Bristol Pilots compiled by John Rich which goes back to 1632. Maybe one to check in a local studies library. Janet D.

Hi Ian,
I have Anstice family originating in Somerset, many being mariners, pilots, sailmakers etc. and can get back to Charles Anstice b. c1769.  I am trying to establish if Wm. fits in with my lot! A number of them moved from Pill to Pill and the names Sarah Ann and Elizabeth crop up in several generations.  Have you any details on Wm's parentage or siblings? Janet

Has anyone any info on Charles Anstice, dates thought to be 1769-1862?  He is thought to have been a Bristol Channel Pilot.  He was the father of Charles Anstice 1802-84.
