I'll have a little look at my Finlayson ancestors and see if I can help as we are well past 1855 (backwards) and a lot if Isabellas.

Hi Carrie-Boyd,
Thank you for your post which I saw yesterday, upon our return home, after a few days away.
I should be very grateful to hear any information regarding Donald's parents Malcolm and Isabella, should you be able to unearth anything.
Looking forward to hearing from you.......once again, many thanks.

If you haven't already come across Bill Lawson then his site might give you some help in your continuing search of the Lochs area.  He is a mine of information about Lewis/Harris etc.

Hi to all;I am new to this board so please forgive any 'daft' errors.
I have traced my great great grandfather Donald Macarthur(previously mentioned by Cileag a year ago) who was born on 22nd Dec.1821 and I am now trying to trace his father and grandfather.
I know it gets a bit tricky pre 1855 but any hints as to how to go about it would really be appreciated.
My previous attempts have come up with a Malcolm Macarthur born in 1780 who married Isabella Finlayson, but I may have been barking up the wrong family tree altogether.
Many thanks.
Now looks like Donald 's parents were indeed Malcolm and Isabella although they may not have married. When I found Donald's widow's death cert. it said that Donald was illegitimate!
Now ,trying to go back further, but it is getting tricky!

Hi Cileag,
These appear to be the only Donald Mc/MacArthur Mary Mc/MacLeod marriages in Lochs around the time frame you are after. It would seem that the first one is more likely to be your family.

29/01/1844 MACARTHUR DONALD MARY MACLEOD/ M LOCHS /ROSS AND CROMARTY 087/ 0010 0152
From the certificate this is all the information given
Donald    MacArthur   residing  at   Carloway
Mary     MacLeod     residing at   Borroston.

24/01/1853 MCARTHUR DONALD MARY MCLEOD/ M LOCHS /ROSS AND CROMARTY 087/ 0010 0167

I have a lot of ancestors from around that area and it is not unusual to find some children registered and not others.

Regards
mariac

Hi Cileag, the above couple married on 29th Jan 1844 are my great, great grandparents and my great grandfather was Alexander Macarthur, presumably the brother of Angus Macarthur. It appears we may be related then!
You haven't posted for about a year but you never know you may see this posting....would be good to hear from you!
