Hello everyone, and thank you for the information on the Rickwood family. The Rickwood's who came to Canada are very difficult to track down. It seems like only one Rickwood came in the 1800s and that we are descended from him. We have hired a professional researcher to help. (Note, that we know for certain that we are descended from a "James Rickwood." His obit said that he was born in London in 1854/55 and that he immigrated as a young man in 1873. He married here in Canada). This is additional details from the researcher:
"Don't know about James for sure ...
Your James claimed to have been born in London in about 1855 and emigrated
to Canada in 1873. I had found the birth registration for a William James
Rickwood in the 3rd Quarter of 1854 (ie July - September) in Lambeth, Surry,
England (a part of London).
I have found a William James Rickwood baptised August 6, 1854 at St. John
the Evangelist, Lambeth, Surry, England, the son of William Rickwood (a
drayman -- a carter) and Jane Baker (they were married the previous January
at the same Church). William and Jane had three other children: Florence
Jane, Sarah Kate and Albert Henry.
I have found William, Jane and Albert H. listed on the 1881 British Census
in Camberwall, Surry. Sarah Kate was a domestic also in Camberwall. No
mention of William James in that area.
There was a William Jas. listed as a Private on the Navy ship "Turquoise".
His age was 26 (ie born about 1855) and his birth was recorded as being in
Brixton, St. Mary's, London (a different parish). There are no James
Rickwoods on the 1881 British Census but remember that your James indicated
that he emigrated in 1873 -- so he shouldn't appear on the 1881 British
Census.
So .... I really don't know what to say. We have a fellow who was born in
the right place at the right time, but also some evidence that he might not
be your James. Any suggestions?"
So, we are somewhat stuck. What I do know, is that many in the family go by their middle name. So, my James could have dropped "William" especially if that was his father's name. I also know that my "James" called his sons Henry, George, and William. Henry then called one of his sons, Albert and one of his girls, Florence. So the names fit.
I would really like to make the connection for certain and then try to research back a little. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
