Monaghan / Re: When did protestant settlers first arrive in Monaghan?

My four times great grandfather Thomas McVittie ( CoI) was living at Clones Co Monaghan in 1778 in the occupation of farmer when his son Elliott was born in 1778.  So I assume there were Protestants about much earlier than that

Dear John Jenson,

Briliant!  Well done and thank you.  That is definitely my paternal ancestor.  We know that he went to live in Dublin from 1822 onwards and Waterloo Road is a familiar address.  He was CoI and the age fits.  That takes me back one further generation.  Now I need to find out more about Thomas McVittie, farmer, who was living in Clones in 1778 when his son Elliott was born.

Yours
Malcolm McVittie

In 1861 a Francis Blake was living in Annyart Townland, Muckno civil Parish, Co Monaghan see www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index, the valuation of house and small garden is very low. Nevertheless here is a Blake living in Co Monaghan, could he be a relative. Have you tried familysearch.com old and new. Good luck onwards, Jim

Thank you Jim I will follow up that link and see if we can get back to "my" Miss Blake.
Yours Malcolm

My great great great grandfather Elliott McVittie was born in Clones Co Monaghan in 1778.  At some stage he married a Miss Blake and Blake became a common christian name in my family for several succeeding generations. Their fourth child a son Robert Blake McVittie was born in Fermoy in 1817.  Does anybody know anything about this Miss Blake or the family she came from?  Our family crest devised by Robert Blake McVittie closely resembles that of the Blakes of Galway.
