Hi Kathi,

Alice and John Savage had Benjamin Poulson S- 1839, Thomas Crompton 1842, James Christopher 1844, Joseph Geo. 1847 John Jones 1851, Richard ? 1853,William Frederick 1857 then the three girls. Joseph G. married Jane Bryson - they had Miriam A  (?  m Charles Rimmer 1907) Ethel, Edmund D, d.WW1 and George H.  George H m Ethel Eburth 1921.  Joseph G died 1918. Benjamin P died 1840, James Christopher commercial clerk, m Isabel B Moore 1876 had Alice M and Ethel (1881 census).  James C died 1882.  I have a query bout a James Henry Savage b and d 1865 - twin of Ellen A B?.(?  Marriage for Ellen A B, your aunt Nel?) Some of these dates are based on censuses and old IGI so there may be more grandchildren for Alice and John.

I shall be most interested to hear about the family in US. Regards Gabrielle

Hi, Kathi,
Delighted to find your message.  Have been off line for a few days.  George Poulson was my gt. grandmother's grandfather.  Gt.grandmother was Ellen Louisa James, daughter of Joanna Poulson, George's eldest daughter by his second wife Mary Ann Hughes.  Alice Poulson was George's daughter by his first wife Ellen Pickavance (recent info thanks to Rootschat).
So much has come on line since I first started researching this family about 20 years ago.  I thought I had come to a dead end but recent sites plus 1911 census have uncovered more descendants and it is so exciting to find lcving relatives.  I thought some of the family might have gone to US as I recently found Annie L M Bailey returning to Liverpool on Carmania with children Meta 13, Victor 11 which suggests they may have paid a visit.  Was Elizabeth's husband John Sutcliffe, married 1890 and did their daughter married a Pook.  There are Pooks in Liverpool (RC?)
How exciting to have the bible.  Do you have photograps and stories about the family.  John and Alice certainly had a large family.  Will break off now and let you have more details later.
Regards,
Gabrielle.

Hi, Moira,

Great to get such a quick response.  I have only just discovered Rootschat and took a chance, so bear with me if I get in a muddle.  I am not a member of Genes Reunited.

We are connected via the Dobson family.  My gt.gt. grandmother, Joanna Poulson (b.Liverpool) was the first  daughter of George Poulson and Mary Ann Hughes.( His first wife was Ellen Pickavance as noted by your previous contacts). Her younger sister Eleanor b.1836 married Geo. Asquith Dobson, draper's assistant in Newcastle and they appear to have had five children - Anne, married Ernest Hind, Emma Louisa m. John H Maughan, Flora m. Thomas Jamieson, Lily and William Asquith (letter carrier) who married Sarah McGee (?).  children George, Matthew and Elizabeth.  Did he marry again, - Mary Potts ?.  Eleanor's sisters - Mary Ann, b.1834 joined her sister in Newcastle and married Francis Gilmour a music master from Hants who was working there, Ann, b.1835 married Thomas Murray and died young, Louisa b 1837 married George Hill Weddell an estate agent who died in 1867.  Their 2 children returned to Liverpool.

My grandmother didn't know much about her mother's family.  They were rather cagey but when my mother wanted to go on the stage (and succeeded) she was told that 'two aunts' had run away from home to go on stage which might explain why they ended up in Newcastle, although it was suggested that the Poulsons were of Danish extraction and there were mariners in the family who hailed from there.
Francis Gilmour, husband of Mary Ann may have had theatrical connections through his work. He seems to   have run away from his family whilst still married .  He was described as a printer whilst married to his first wife.

Any info about the Newcastle Poulsons would be most welcome.

I look forward to hearing from you.
Gabrielle.

Thanks Allan,

As you say there are many Mary Ann Hughes -but that seems a possibility.  I have her down as b.1803 based on census but the fact her father was a tobacconist is interesting and it might be worth investigating the Hughes line.  George and Mary Ann's youngest child George was baptised twice, the first time in Preston where George seems to have been working temporarily as a publican.  He later becomes a tobacconist in New Hall St, and later in U. Harrington Street - I wonder if his father in law helps him with this.

Back again!

Sorry to be misleading.  Joanna Poulson ( first daughter of George and Mary Ann ) married John Henry James, a mariner and they had four children, John Henry in 1850, Mary Elizabeth in 1851, Ellen Louisa (my gt. grandmother) in 1857. (  She married a Manchester accountant - Charles Henry Thompson. ) and Florence in 1859.  All born in Liverpool. I think Mary Ann P was born in Liverpool but I would need to dig up 1851/61 censuses.

Hi,
Great to have your message.  Only discovered Rootschat last night and was so anxious to post a message that I did everything from memory.  I am still working out how to do it!

I have a lot of paper relating to these families accumulated over the years which I put to one side in order to concentrate on other branches and it will take a while to sort them out.  So please bear with me!

Anyway, 'my' Savage - John  (b.1821) who married Alice Poulson, was the son of Benjamin Savage and Hannah. Ben and Hannah had at least 10 children between 1817 and 1832, all except one bapt. at Liverpool St Peter.  There may have been more children and I probably found these on IGI some years ago when I first started on my tree.  So many more records have become available on line that I have started updating my Poulson/Savage link.  I can find no Herberts in that branch.

I had a long correspondence a while back with R Paul Higham who was related to the Savages and was distantly connected to mine.  Perhaps you have heard from him.  We did speak on phone and exchanged photos - he was living in Bahamas, I think and returned to England and family but I did not hear from him this Christmas.

I am delighted to get the date of George's first marriage and the surname of his first wife - Pickavance - a good name to research.

Will continue later.  Gabrielle

Have just come across references to this family.  I am descended from George Poulson and his second wife Mary Ann nee Hughes. (aka Marian).
The  first daughter of this marriage, Joanna, married John Henry James, a master mariner who died off  the coast of Nigeria. Their 2nd daughter Ellen Louisa married my gt. grandfather Charles Henry Thompson, an accountant in Manchester. George and Mary Ann had a number of daughters who all seem to have married - 4 in Newcastle - to Murray, Asquith Dobson, Weddell and Gilmour.

Another daughter Eliza married William Smith, a mariner and Elizabeth Ann managed to fit in 4 husbands over 10 years, Craggs, Davies, Cain and Sutherland.  His eldest daughter Alice by his first wife married a John Savage who worked for the Mersey Docks and Harbour board, as did their son.

There was a son by first marriage who appears to have died and another George who was baptised twice in Preston and L'pool.  Of him I can find no trace,  no apparent death anywhere.

George was a tobacconist (or tobacco manufacturer) in Jordan Street, and 51 Upper Harrington Street.  Also Simpson Street and New Hall Street..  In 1861 Census Mary Ann was to be found in Birmingham living with two girl lodgers and was described as a tobacconist.  No trace of George at that time altho' he is listed in directory.  He marries for a third time and dies in Amlwych, Anglesey.

Look forward to hearing from connections.

Have only just joined Rootschat so am not familiar with the process.

Saw your info about Poulson family.  Have been researching this family for years and have a great deal of info. about them which I am happy to share.  I am descended from George Poulson via his daughter by 2nd marriage, Joanna, who married John H James a mariner.   Their daughter Ellen Louisa James was my gt. grandmother - she married a Thompson in Manchester.  George married a third time after Mary Ann (Marian) and died in Wales at Amlych.
