Hi Molly,
Noted your Hulse/Hooley posting, and as Hulse is a family name of mine decided to look to see if there was a connection.

Parish of Over Page 74, 28.12.1845 (147)
Thomas Hooley, full age, batchelor, labourer of Swanlow, father John Hulse, Gamekeeper, married Anne Hulse, full age, spinster of Townfields, (this is in the Parish of Over) father George Hulse, Labourer. Both signed with a "x" and John and Ann Hunt were witness, also signing with a "x".

Parish of Over Page 91, 28.12.1847 (181)
Thomas Hooley, full age, widower, labourer of Over, father John Hulse (reputed father written in brackets underneath) Labourer married Martha Tomlinson, full age, spinster of Over, father William Tomlinson, labourer.  Both signed with a "x" and again John and Ann Hunt were witness, also signing with a "x".

Burials for Parish of Over, page 31 - Anne Hooley (No 244) of Swanlow Lane, buried 25th June, 1846 aged 21 years.

Burials for St. Johns Parish of Over, Martha Hooley 5th June, 1887 aged 58 years.

Burials for St. Johns Parish of Over, Thomas Hooley 3.4.1889 aged 62 years.

There is a baptism Over Parish (No 23) for Mary Anne Hulse daughter of George and Mary Hulse of Over, 16.4.1826.  George's occupation is Sawyer.

1841 I found Thomas Hooley at Outsides (this is a farm) aged 15 Ag Lab
1851 Thomas and Martha Hooley at Oak House Lane, his occupation is now Saltboiler
1861 Thomas and Martha Hooley and family, + lodgers are in Over Lane, occupation is Saltmaker.
1871 Thomas & Martha Hooley are in Factory Street, occupation Saltboiler.

Noted in Tattenhall, Cheshire, 12.4.1829 Sarah to James and Elizabeth Hooley of Tattenhall ???  Tattenhall is not far from Bunbury, so the Hooley family must be in that area.

I too cannto find a baptism for Thomas Hooley in Bunbury.  ??

Moors Lane, Swanlow, Over Lane (now High Street), Oakhouse Lane, Factory Street are all within the environs of Over.  Winsford is made up of the two townships of Over and Wharton.  Outsides is a farm on the outskirts of Over Winsford, on the way to Little Budworth and eventually Bunbury.

Hope this helps, but after all of that, I do not think your Hulse's and my Hulse's are connected.  Hulse is a very common, Wharton, Over, Winsford name.....  many were boat people.

Thank you

To all, for taking the time to respond to my query.  All information is useful to me, although we don't have anything definite as yet for Thomas's first wife - presumed Elizabeth.

For "andrewalston" we have been in touch before.  Your Edwin is brother to my great grandfather Alfred.  I know you have done a lot of work on the Crew family.  If I can help with any information you might need regarding Alfred, please let me know.

I will leave this Post open for a few more weeks to see if anything comes in.

Again, many thanks to all....

Morning Rosie99

Thanks for your reply.  Elizabeth died in the May and the Census in 1841 was done in June, so regrettably Elizabeth was not around.

I have found a Thomas Crew, with correct age, in the Hurdsfield area in 1841.  He would appear to be lodging in a hostel or boarding house attached to a silk mill.  Did I mention Thomas was involved in the silk industry and hence my searching in Shoreditch/Bethnal Green and Macclesfield.

I have found a marriage of a Thomas Crew to an Elizabeth Gray/Gaie in St. Pancras in 1838 which is probably worth further investigation.

Many thanks for taking the time to reply.

Hi Ruskie,

Many thanks for replying.  You are right, I do not know for certain that Thomas's first wife was Elizabeth, but on the advice of our local Archivist and in the light of no other evidence we thought it worth following the information on the gravestone in Hurdsfield.  Thomas did spend time in Hurdsfield and at least if there is no connection they can be excluded.

It is the twins George Thomas and John Joseph that prompt me to investigate further - the dates, names matching grandfathers and a history of twins do seem to fit the family.

Also, I have looked for a Thomas Crew marrying an Elizabeth in Middlesex and I have found one - a marriage in 1838 in St. Pancras - Elizabeth Gray or Gaie.  However, before sending for the certificate I thought I would ask the wider community of family historians if anyone had any additional information.

Again many thanks for your response

Hi rosie17

Very many thanks for your response.

Thomas Crew was involved in the silk industry travelling frequently between Spittalfields and Macclesfield.  I have found a Thomas Crew on the 1841 census with the correct age residing at a hostel attached to a Silk Mill in Macclesfield although he is not identified as "Widow"- probably my Thomas Crew, but at the moment I do not have firm evidence.   As regards his first wife Elizabeth, she is noted to have been buried on 19th May, 1841, and as the 1841 census was undertaken in the June of that year she would not have been recorded.

I'll keep looking, but again, very many thanks for taking the time to respond.

Afternoon genechaser,

Many thanks for taking the time to respond to my request.  Unfortunately, I do not think this information is applicable.  Must admit, I did not mention and perhaps I should have done so, that Thomas Crew spent his time between Spittalfields and Macclesfield, he was in the silk trade.  Also, I did note the marriage you mention (1825) would have put Thomas at only approx. 15 years old or so and therefore I think it unlikely.

Again, very many thanks for responding...

Hi,

This may or may not be of use.

I suggest you look on the internet at the Family History Society of Cheshire website.  An Altricham Branch (which I have a feeling has now closed) member by the name of Peggy Sumner has written a book on the Gleaves of High Legh and Dunham and this book contains the trees of many Gleaves of Cheshire.  It may be of help to you.

Although the Altrincham Branch is closed, I am sure the FHSC will have a copy of this book at their Archive Centre in Mobberly.

Might be worth a try ?

Help Please.

Thomas Crew(e) born/baptised 1810/1811 Shoreditch, Middlesex - Father George Crew, mother Sarah Corr.  He married Ellen Wildgoose born 1822, in Gawsworth St. James, Cheshire 5th September, 1842.  Ellen's father was John Wildgoose, ? a shoemaker.

On the marriage certificate Thomas Crew is noted as a "Widower" .  Does anyone have details of his first wife?

I have found a grave (No 106) in Holy Trinity Church, Hurdsfield, Cheshire with the MI as follows:-

"Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth wife of Thomas Crewe of Macclesfield who died May 19th 1841 aged 27 years.  Also George Thomas and John Joseph Crewe the infant sons of Thomas and Ellen Crewe who died June 1843

The names and dates fit, even the names of the infant twins (twins do run in the Crew family) fit the christian names of their grandfathers.... but, I can find no definitive confirmation.

Does anyone have any information that would clarify this matter??  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
