World War One / Re: How do i fine more info on 'Mentioned in Despatches'

Thanks everyone,

Haig's dispatches are online. the full text can be found here:
http://archive.org/stream/sirdouglashaigsd00haiguoft/sirdouglashaigsd00haiguoft_djvu.txt but it doesn't list names.
and Ady thanks for the supplement, not much information there either.

I think a trip to Camberley and Kew, London seems in order. All i know he was at the Woolwich Barracks after the war and in the BEF during the war.

Hi terry

thanks very much. I too have found this information on family search, but as yet i don't have any evidence to back it up, the last 4 children including James have been submitted by someone else not extracted from the parish records.

thanks again

Hi Barbara

I only have James Orr in the 1841 census as he died 1847 and there its just Scotland as birth place. Agnes Bell emigrated to Melbourne in 1854, in the 1851 census again its just Scotland, but I have her birth place as Leith, not Lauder, but i don't know where i got that information. in the 1851 census James junior birth pace Berwickshire, William i have Lauderdale and Edinburgh in different censuses

Hi

sorry about the spelling, not my best subject, anyway the information above is all I have and no points of reference at all. On one census Agnes Ann said place of birth Edinburgh, but then every census she lied about her age!

thank

Durham / Re: Completed How do I find a sailing ship possibly sunk
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 16:09 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Ros

the first site, I think only covers foreign trade ships. the ship I'm looking for is home trade and its not listed. I had already used the second site, that's how I found out about the Aid being home trade. The National Maritime Museum is closed until the beginning of September, so may not find out anything about the ship until after then, but I'm going to email them. I'm off the Kew in 2 weeks time so should get more info on my ggreatfather as they have records of all Master mariners and mates, keeping my fingers crossed.

some other sites I found
