Armed Forces / Re: ADEN - THE FORMER CROWN COLONY
« on: Friday 03 November 17 16:36 GMT (UK)  »
I can remember transiting through RAF Khormaksar. Aden in 1965 en-route to RAF Gan.Maldive Islands.  I was only a very young airman and didn't know what to expect but upon landing a group of us was transferred onto a waiting coach to transfer us to the 'Red Sea Hotel' in Crater for a couple of nights.  I can remember the coach windows being tape to help stop any glass shattering onto us and an armed escort at both ends of the coach. As soon as we reached Crater, one at a time we ran from the coach to the Hotel entrance which was heavily sandbagged with armed soldiers guarding. It was night time and although the rooms were cool I opened the balcony doors to be very quickly told by a couple of armed privates to get back in.  It wasn't until the morning when we were being addressed by the RSM that this was not to be expected as a 'holiday hotel' and if we wanted to walk into Crater to go in large groups and make sure any that was purchased to be visible.  Two days later I was back on the aircraft to take me to RAF Gan with the memory of Aden behind me but for the support and advice of the incumbent army soldiers a young innocent airman may have left Aden in a different way So I salute those who served there and hope recognition is duly noted.

Thanks Dawnsh
I've already gone down that route years ago when the Children Act 1975 Section 26 became in force.  So I have already been interviewed by a counsellor in 1978 and contact with my mother was made but it wasn't a happy conclusion. The GRO did not send me any files at the time.

Thanks LizzieW for the info.
I haven't got an adoption file but so far understand that files issued by Friends House Juvenile Court. Euston are now being held by London Metropolitan Archives which I have just applied for and hopefully they will confirm either way. If there is a file I'm not sure what I would expect to find written....it could be exciting.
As far as staying with my birth Mother that would not have been an option.  Her husband returned from Europe at the end of WW11 and found her expecting me.......so I was banished.

« on: Monday 30 October 17 11:44 GMT (UK)  »
I am attempting to gain information from the following facts:

Born: 15 June 1945 at 262 St Margarets Unmarried Mothers Hostel. Hackney
Register of birth issued.

Adopted: 19 March 1946 at Friends House Juvenile Court
Certificate of Entry in the Adopted Children Register issued.

My question is, is there anyway I can find out where I was kept between these dates. I am now at a dead end and need some guidance.

I wonder if there is anyone out there who could give me any information of St.Margarets Unmarried Mothers Hostel in Hackney (262 Victoria Park Road).  I was born there in 1945 and in 1946 was adopted.  I have been fully successful in researching my past apart from the first year of my life.  Any info would be gratefully received.
