Hi Ian,

very pleased with this effort.  As regards colour????????
Surely the Urdu word for dust - i.e. KHAKI.  Just a logical assumption though.
If you have the time to research that and colour it up, that would be brilliant.  n.b. The records of service you require ought to be still available from the Army Personnel Centre at the Ministry of Defence. The contact details are as follows:

Hi Kassejayne & Steve G.,
re Black Irish.           this link:  https://owlcation.com/stem/Irish-Blood-Genetic-Identity

offers some insight re black haired/dark or swarthy skinned people of Irish descent. There is a portion:
entitled: Who Are the "Black Irish"?

The following may be of some help re the distinction between Romany and Tinker.
The Illustrated Gaelic Dictionary points out that the Irish Gaelic word ‘ceaird’ denoted a tradesman, mechanic, artificer, travelling tinsmith.
A worker in light metal, i.e. tin, was a ‘tin-ceaird ’ which has evolved into ‘tinker.’
There are a number of theories as to the origin of the Tinsmith (tinkers).  Until not long ago they were referred to as "Tinkers" this word referred to their occupation as Tinsmiths and metal workers and was derived from the Irish word (Ceard) (Smith) or tinceard (tinsmith).
Because of the Irish origin, a tinker as such has no connection with Romany.

Hi laurajean,
The Smith clan were domiciled on the Black Patch Smethwick from circa 1860 - 1906 when they were finally removed/evicted.  The best sources for you to obtain, are:  1/ The Family Tree of Woodfine Smith by Josephine Tombs and 2/ BRUMROAMIN by Ted Rudge.
#1 can be purchased from: The Romany & Traveller www.rtfhs.org.uk  and
#2 can be purchased from Ted and Maureen Rudge

My forebears moved off the Black Patch and settled in Stoke.

Hello Alan
Lovely to hear from you. I have re checked you are correct Catherine,  the 1881 census correct, it say Joseph was a tin man then. 1891 Joseph with children and wife. 1901 still in the same area. Yes I have been doing the tree and found the Familys moved over to live new life in USA and Canada. Who I have found the decendants. We have done a FB page, really lovely to see us all on the tree and sharing information. Would love you to join, you will be welcome. I have got quite a lot of information and in contact with some writers---- FB woodfine Smith.
Really looking foward to your reply.
Many Thank Penny and steve smith

Hi Penny and Steve,
I am not up with abbreviations, so presume FB page means FACEBOOK?????
I have not wanted to join Facebook for several reasons.
Woodfine married an Elizabeth PYATT not PRATT as you state.  I have a copy of their marriage cert
and it is clearly listed as such.  Also signed by her father James Pyatt (Miner) December 1st 1895.
My email is tynedale@slingshot.co.nz so we can communicate more in depth directly with one another.
regards to you both,   Alan

Hi,    New Zealand calling...................
I am descended fom Woodfine's younger brother Matthew (1880).
You state that Woodfine's mother, Joseph's wife,  was called Coralina.  Woodfines's birth cert. shows her name as Catherine (nee Holland) not Coralina. (she used various first names)!
I would be very interested to see your family tree please.
