Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Berkshire marriage lookup please.!
« on: Monday 27 June 22 12:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi folks, my Grandmother was a Povey & the Povey family is vast, originally centred in West Berkshire area.
John Povey seems to be the most popular name within this family viz my own G G Grandfather was John Povey b.1819 who was a Grandson Of John Povey b.1749 who in turn was a Grandson of John Povey b.circa 1700 my 6G Grandfather so caution is needed when researching a John Povey. There is a record of a Lt John Povey in the Duke of Monmouthshire’s rebellion & and after they lost he hid in the family home at Chievley.

I have a couple of Povey reports which the majority was researched by  my cousin at Berks RO some years back and information from my own research as well as other Povey researchers, which I am happy to share if you send me a Rootschat PM with your email address. These documents do refer to a William Povey now Living at Speen s/o John Povey Yeoman from Elcott Kintbury.

From all of the research I am convinced that Povey is a single family name not an occupational surname perhaps descended from Justinian Povey d.1652 (See Wikipedia) and perhaps Justinian Povey had a country home in West Berkshire at Chievley? His 3 sons were named  John , William & Thomas Povey??

No this is a different Walter Charles, our Walter died in 1965 in the Aldershot district. In 1930 he was A Corporal in the 2ND Bart Royal Berkshires stationed in Aldershot service # is either #5330554 or 5338554 and by 1934 he was a Sergent in the Indian Army Corp of Clerks.

Thank you MaxD, all that useful information from 2 photos and a the longlong trail looks to be very useful for researching others in my tree many of whom were Royal Berkshires inc FGC's younger brother Walter Charles who went on to join the Indian Army Corps of Clerks.

The initial query that triggered me receiving them was due to a discussion & difference of sibling memories on my other Grandfathers activities in  WW2, "Home Guard" vs Emergency Hospital Scheme. I will post a query on the WW2 page.

@Carol, yes they would benefit from some TLC, I will post them there in due course, I may have some more coming down the pipline  as well.

Hi MaxD

Thanks for the very helpful response's, which from the buttons have confirmed that both images are FGC and not one of his father Charles whose medals we have and I have located Charles's Pre WW1 war record, slighly singed round the edges but still readable.
The information has certainly narrowed down trying to find FGC's record & I thought I had found it but sadly no.
FGC was born in Richmond area of Surrey in 1897/8 but before WW1 the family had moved to Reading Berkshire. From the info you have kindly provided I think from searching FindMyPast's medal records  his service number may have been either; Service number    153192 Rank    Gunner Regiment    Royal Field Artillery or Service number    108644 Rank    Gunner Regiment    Royal Garrison Artillery
But I only had limited time this morning at the library so it may be one of the ones I didnt get to.

HI
I have received 2 photographs from another family member. The 1st one with the name written across it is  my grandfather in, from what I can make out of the Cap badge,  a  Royal Artillery desert uniform. I don't know what the sleeve marking would be. From his age he would have served in WW1. The other photo may be him but can anyone comment on whether the style of uniform was used by R.A. in this era, it could be his father, my G Grandfather, who served in the 2ND Boer War & also served in the Royal Army Service Corps in W.W.1. Can anyone provide any information?
Thank You

Hello Ravelin

Thanks for your reply and comments

I think my Elizabeth Cruse is probably the sister of your Thomas Cruse and they are probably the children of Thomas Cruse & Elizabeth Giet ? Agreed

Your Elizabeth b1802 must be the daughter of Thomas Cruse & Jane Clements who married 26 Jun 1785 in Sherfield on Loddon. Yes this is she , she married  George Cook  in 1823 in Sherfield on Loddon

Thomas & Jane had another daughter named Elizabeth born in 1786. She must be the 1787 burial in Sherfield on Loddon.  I hadn't got this Elizabeth so thank you for this. I am suspicious that my Elizabeth is the d/o Jane Clements as she would have been in her late 40's Early 50's in 1802 if her given ages are true.

I think the 1827 burial could be this Thomas ? Agreed I have corrected my information. The birth year on FindMyPast is correct for this Thomas

Here are two more burial's i found :
Elizabeth Cruse buried 1792 Basingstoke (born 1726).  (Probably Elizabeth Giet ?)
Thomas Cruse buried Basingstoke in 1811. (Probably Thomas the husband of Elizabeth Giet ?) Plan to take a trip to the local library to use their ancestry to see what I can find on these 2 but I think you are probably correct. I will let you know what I can find better still my wife may let me renew my sub to FindMyPast  :)

Hi Ravelin

Very interested to see the name Elizabeth Cruse & Basingstoke come up

My 3* Great-grandmother is  Elizabeth Cruse B.1802 Sherfield on Loddon which is 7.5 miles N.E of Basingstoke my Elizabeth is stated as  the d/o Thomas Cruse  circa 1756 [I have my suspicions of a cover up]. There is a  burial of an Elizabeth Cruse in 1787 in St Leonards  Sherfield on Loddon where Thomas Cruse was buried 2 May 1827. Could this be Elizabeth Cruse nee Giet?
