Family History Beginners Board / McClean
« on: Monday 21 July 14 18:46 BST (UK)  »
My great grandparents were James McClean - details unknown and Annie (Jane?) surname possibly Oliver, Jackson or Duncan (died 1955) living in the Ballyclare, Co. Antrim area. They had 3 children: Margaret Jane 31/10/1883, Mary Jackson 10/2/1891 and Joseph 9/3/1899. Can anyone provide background to this couple and when and where they were born and married?

My great great grandfather Samuel Smyth, born c1847; date of death unknown, married Mary Jane - surname not known but may be Horner or Wilkinson. They had 5 or 6 children - Elizabeth (Eliza) 29/3/1872, William John 1879, Alexander 2/7/1882, Joseph 4/9/1884, Robert 19/1/1886 and Samuel? D.O.B. unknown.

Can any one help with details of when and where this couple were born and married? In 1901 census they lived at Rashee, near Ballyclare, Co. Antrim.

Mary Jane is buried in Mallusk cemetery but I have no record of Samuel's burial place.

Thanks

My greatgrandfather, Joseph Smyth, was born in the Ballyclare/Kilbride area on 4 September 1884. He married Annie Creighton on 13 November 1903. Unfortunately she died on 17 September 1910. He remarried but I do not know the name of his 2nd wife nor date of marriage. He lived in Leopold St, Belfast at the time of his death which I think occurred in late 1950s/early 60s.

I would like to know the name of his second wife; their date of marriage; his date of death and burial place.

Antrim / Old Rashee Graveyard
« on: Monday 29 April 13 18:27 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to locate where my great great grandparents John Kernaghan and Eliza nee McBride are buried. They lived at Kilbride, Doagh. John may have died 20 April 1887. I don't have a date of death for Eliza. Apparently they are not buried in Kilbride graveyard. The other possibility might be the old Doagh graveyard. Can anyone help with this please?

Sarah Jane Lawther McAlister was my great great aunt. I don't know the background to the name Lawther. It might relate to a family friend or neighbour which would have been quite common practice at the time. She was unmarried with one daughter Jane (Jean) b. C1906 who married John Tyrrell but had no children. Sarah had 4 siblings. Her grandfathers were William McAlister and Malcolm Boyd. I think her grandmother Boyd was called Jenny but don't know her maiden name.

Thanks for all of this info. I don't have any definitive information but will explore the 1919 marriage possibility to confirm whether this is the correct couple. Seems likely as Sarah had an older sister Elizabeth who married William Neilson and they lived at Copeland Road in the Govan area of Glasgow.

I am trying to identify when my great-greataunt  Sarah Kernaghan born c1887 Kilbride, Doagh Co. Antrim emigrated to USA or Canada. It was after 1911 census. She may have gone from Ireland or Scotland as she married John/Jack Cowie and settled in Saskatchewan. Date, Ship Name and departure and arrival ports would be really helpful. She may have gone to USA first and crossed to Canada at some stage.

Antrim / McBride/Kernaghan:Kilbride/Artnagullion?
« on: Thursday 04 August 11 22:41 BST (UK)  »
John McBride lived at Kilbride in the early 1800s. He had a daughter Eliza who was born c1837 and married John Kernaghan who may have been from Artnagullion, Co. Antrim.

Any information about the Kernaghan and McBride families in the early- mid 1800s would be useful.
