Thank you, I know the location of the Sirhowy valley, but I was confused by Sirhowy being called a town in the census.
Shall I just assume then it is not referring to an actual town, but rather the area of the Sirhowy valley  that runs from Tredegar down towards Newbridge?

Monmouthshire / Where is the 'town' of Sirhowy

Hi folks, on an 1871 census my ancestor is under enumeration district 21 which is described as the town of Sirhowy, hamlet of Manmoel.  I know where Manmoel is but I don't know a town called Sirhowy-is it an early name for Blackwood?
Please enlighten me. ;D

Thanks for sharing the photos David, they're brilliant.  It really brings history to life when you can imagine the places people lived.  I'm hoping to visit the area too one day although I think I'll wait until after winter.   :)

Thank you for confirming that, from the original photo I can see the board says No1 Battery, 4th Section but I can't read the larger initials

World War One / WW1 Manmoel soldier
« on: Sunday 10 August 14 10:18 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
We have found some photos of my great great uncle Thomas Jones (b1892) who was a soldier in the First World War.  I  am trying to find out more about him.  I can't find his service records on Ancestry but I know he and his brother both served in the war.  They were both farmer's sons living in Manmoel, Monmouthshire in 1911.

I have a souvenir card from Germany that says 'From Gunner Jones' and from looking at other websites I believe his uniform is pre-1916 Royal Artillery.  We have two group photos which I think must include his brother as I can't find him there.
I would like to know if anyone can tell me what the initials are in the group photo and if anyone can point me towards more information about Welsh soldiers in WW1(like what regiments they might have belonged to).
Thanks for reading-Rhiannon

Monmouthshire / Mynyddislwyn Agricultural Society
« on: Wednesday 24 April 13 14:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello all,
I have just been reading through a book by R.T. Jones called ' From Ox team to Tractor-The history of the Mynyddislwyn Agricultural Society 1870-1972' that I have as my Dad was involved in the ploughing matches put on by the society.
I think it would be of interest to anyone researching farming ancestors in the area(Mynyddislwyn, Bedwellty, Bedwas Upper, Llanhilleth and Aberystruth) as it gives details of where ploughing matches were held and lists of prizewinners, as well as details of general local history and photos.
It is available to view in Blackwood and Risca libraries.

Derbyshire / Re: Beehive Yard, Chesterfield?
« on: Wednesday 11 July 12 20:49 BST (UK)  »
I am interested in Beehive yard too as have ancestors who were born there.  Beehive Rd is still there, it is a street of terraced houses(to me they look approx 1900's ish, but I'm no expert).  I am not sure if I'm correct but I think the yard was a different place as I have seen photos on picturethepast.org.uk which show cottages from Beehive Yard in 1939 and the description says'before they were demolished'.  To see the photos just put'beehive yard' into the search box on the picture the past website.  There are also some photos of beehive type kilns, which the yard/street were probably named after.
There is a fair amount of greenspace in the area now-could that have been where the cottages were?
It's one of the things I've been meaning to clarify but haven't got round to yet.  Please let me know if you get any further!
