Australia / Re: The Children of Daniel McBride SCOTT

I finally got the details for the Estate of A.G. SCOTT as you advised . It indeed was for an A.G Scott and not Daniel as we were hoping for. Tracking and getting a death certificate  for the 1908 period in South Africa is not a straight forward task. I've had several email replies which just lead to more email addresses. Apparently there was a big shake up of the provinces in 1994 and old records are scattered everywhere.  TEDED

I have now received a copy of Alice Helena (not Eleanor) Bassett's death certificate. Her parents, birth place (Young), 1st. marriage place (Temora), are correct. Lily and Martha are listed as the only 2 children of this marriage, though their ages are the wrong way around. There is no mention of the 3 children that died as infants. The certificate says "none deceased". Her 1st. husband is listed as John Scott (instead of Daniel). It claims she married Jack Bassett at Orange. NSW., though I've found no record of this yet. It lists the children of the 2nd. marriage as Mabel and Jack. I was unable to upload a copy of Alice and Mabel's headstone. Thanks for all your help in tracking Alice. TEDED

Just received the "death certificate" for Alice Helena (not Eleanor) Bassett. It states her parents correctly. It states Lily and Martha ( the ages are the wrong way around ) as only children, as it doesn't mention any of the three deceased children from the 1st. marriage (says "none deceased") and her 1st. husband as "John Scott". She supposedly married a "Jack Bassett" at Orange NSW when she was 34 yrs. old. (1899 or 1900). It gets her birthplace (Young) and place of 1st. marriage (Temora NSW) correct. I couldn't get a copy of the death certificate or Alice's headstone to upload. TEDED

My youngest sister (from Canberra) was in Sydney yesterday and went out to Rookwood cemetery with my eldest sister. After a bit of a search, they found Alice's grave, which was a liitle bit overgrown. They did a minor clean-up, put some orange roses on the grave and took some photos of it. I'll post a photo when I get one. Aparently, her daughter,Mabel, is buried with her. It looks like Mabel died giving birth to a daughter, Beryl. In photos taken at my Dads's 21st birthday party in Oct. 1933, there is a young 10-12 yr. old girl called Beryl, who was a bit of mystery to us. It seems that Beryl was raised by LiL (Agnes Maud Scott), which explains why Beryl is in photos with Lil . So now the research begins into Beryl, and Alice's last 2 children, Mabel and John Bassett, as well as the father, Norman Bassett. Open one door any others open. TEDED

Keeping everyone up to date. My youngest sister from Canberra was in Sydney yesterday. Went out to Rookwood cemetery and after a bit of a search, found Alice's grave. Apparently, Mabel, her daughter, is with her. The grave was a bit overgrown, so my sisters done a bit of cleaning up, put some orange roses on the grave and took photos. Still waiting for replies of several emails I sent enquiring about the burial of a Daniel Scott on 2-10-1908 at Barkly West Northern Province South Africa. I'll post a photo Of Alice's grave When I get it.  TEDED

South Africa / Re: Death Notices in South Africa

Bruce. There's a missing great grandfather. It's only this week that the mystery was solved on his wife in Australia. The whole story is on the RootsChat sites "Children of Daniel McBride Scott"  and "Christian Names Only". We believe great grandfather took off to South Africa on missionary work (his father did the same thing), sometime after 1893. My grandmother wrote on the back of a photo in July 1907 that he was in SA - Kimberley. There is no Kimberley in South Australia (an Australian State) so we assume it is Kimberley, South Africa. He is marked as deceased on my Grandmother's wedding certificate of 1-1-1910. So our Daniel Scott died between mid-1907 and late 1909. That's why I'm trying to find the details of a burial of a Daniel Scott, listed on the "Burial Register 1878-1927 (entry no:278) of St.Mary The Virgin Anglican Church, Barkly West. (died 1-1-08, buried 2-10-1908). TED-Australia

I'm looking for advice on how to go about obtaining a death notice for a death in Barkly West, Northern Cape that occurred in 1908. I have the church's burial register and entry number for the funeral service which gives the date of death and burial date. TEDED

Essie. I've just been doing a bit of research on burials in South Africa (not my expertise), trying to track the other half of the marriage of my great grandparents. I stumbled across a burial for a "Daniel Scott" in the burial register for St. Mary Anglican Church at Barkly West (which is west of Kimberley S.A. ).  This Daniel died on 1st. Oct. 1908, age 52 (the right age for Daniel McBride Scott) and he was buried the next day by J.Cottrell. I stumbled across this information on: www.eggsa.org   Hope you can help me see if it's our Daniel or not.   TEDED
