Hi Serena and all,

I have just viewed this subject thread so apologies for late contribution.  I am a Beard whose family roots lie in Sussex, so I have researched the name within the county quite a lot .  There are a number of Sussex Beard family groups apparently unrelated post 1500 but probably most certainly at some point before that date.  One of the most successful and prominent of these is the Rottingdean branch of Beards, well documented back to the late 1400s, who spawned the now defunct Beard's Brewery of Lewes ancestors who became extremely wealthy, as well as others being extensive local land and property owners with interests in farming and milling.

I can tell you that your George Beard of Chailey was an offshoot of the Rottingdean Beard family.  There have been other different Beard family groups in Chailey at various times. The ancestral line for George is a follows:

Richard Beard (1492-1526) of Rottingdean marries Elizabeth ?, parents of John Beard (1522-1563) marries Agnes ? in 1548, parents of Thomas Beard (1548-1627) marries Susannah? in 1574, parents of George B T Beard (1591-1645) marries Agnes Alse in Beddingham 25/11/1616 then Ann Gibbons in 1624 and lastly Jane Roberts in Shoreham in 1627, parents of George Beard (1637-) of East Dean marries Sarah Wheeler in Lancing 10/2/1658/9, parents of George Beard born in Bishopstone 26/4/1655 marries there Mary Sunderland in 29/9/1688, parents of George Beard (1690-1754) of Seaford marries Katherine Butler in Willingdon 31/9/1791, parents of George Beard (1730-1800) born Seaford moves to Chailey marries there Mary Rootes 21/6/1755.

Trust this helps.

Benzon,

I have done a lot of research on the Beards of Sussex, of which there are a handful of large family groups although I haven't yet connected them all together.

Your Herts Beards do go back to James born in Horsted Keynes in 1823.  This branch of the family I believe derive from ancestors from Horsted Keynes, Barcombe, Uckfield, Framfield, Buxted and Fletching (1500's).

Trust this is of assistance if you are still looking.

Regards.
