Thanks Ken for posting such a fantastic record of the Harvey family.  I've enjoyed discovering more about the Harvey and Clark family connection to shipbuilding in Rye. I am descended from Nicholas Harvey's(b.1708)  marriage to Elizabeth Cooper, their son Nicholas Harvey(b.C1752), his son Lester Harvey(b.C1784, a Sailmaker),his son Stephen Stocks Harvey(b. C1815) and his son Robert Surtees Harvey (b.1841- my great, great grandfather).

Recently, I discovered the family association with the Battle Gunpowder Mills.  The following site, gives a wonderful account of the history of the Mills and you will find Lester Harvey (b.1730) and some of his descendants mentioned.  Four of his children are included in his will, proved on the 15th April 1801, Mary (the wife of Rev. Thomas Fuller of Heathfield), Jane (the wife of William Holtham), Hannah Harvey (unmarried) and William Gillmore Harvey.

Hi Liz,

Yes I have, thanks.  The Lilbournes are only a small branch, away from my main family tree but it is interesting to see how they are all connected. I'm sure that you are right about the origin of Phillip Clark's name.

Hi Liz,

The Phillip Lilbourne that you refer to, was Mary Lilbourne's brother.  He was born C1711 in Rye.  Their parents were Phillip Lilbourne b. 14th Sep. 1680, Rye and Mary Graves.  Phillip b.1680, had a sister Elizabeth b. 6th Nov. 1676, who married Richard Vousdon and it was their daughter Mary who married John Clark.  So yes, they do belong to the same family.  Siblings Mary and Phillip Lilbourne were Mary Vousdon's cousins.

Hi,

I 've just found your posting and think that I will be able to help.  George Harvey b.1806 new Romney, was one of 9 children born to Thomas Harvey and Elizabeth Paine who married in New Romney on 30th Sept. 1793.
Thomas Harvey was born C1774 Rye and died in Dover in 1855.  He was the son of John Harvey and Martha Simms who married in Rye on 3rd Sept 1765.  In total they had 11 children.
John Harvey was born C1739 in Rye and died at Mahon in Minorca.  John was one of two sons born to Nicholas Harvey and Mary Libourne who married in Rye on 14th Sept. 1736.
Nicholas Harvey b. C1708 Rye was the son of Lester Harvey b.C1677 and Frances Benson who married in Rye on 7th Mar. 1696.

I hope that this helps.

Thanks Jennifer, yes you are onto the right family.  John Joseph Griffiths was working as a Miller in a cement factory in Poplar before he moved to Sandsend, Yorkshire to work as a Cement Manufacturer.  The Mary Ann/ Marion in the 1851 & 1861 census is his second wife.  he married Mary Ann Grout nee Eling on 4/6/1843 at St. Mary's Church, Bow.  She was also a widow.  Mary Ann Eling was baptised at St. Botolph's Church, Northfleet on 21/2/1808.

John Joseph's 1st wife was also named Mary Ann.  She appears on the 1841 census but I'm struggling to find out more information about her.

Thanks for trying,
Viv.

Trying to find a marriage between John Joseph Griffiths b. 19/7/1802 Sheerness and Mary Ann (don't know surname) b. C1805 (don't know where).

Their 1st child Margaret, was born C1828 (don't know where).  Other children were born in Staines, Middlesex in 1831, Chesham, Buckinghamshire in 1835 and Poplar, London in 1837 and 1840.  Mary Ann appears on the 1841 census living with her family in Poplar.  She was not born in the county. She died in 1843.

Can anyone help to locate a marriage record for them?  John was working as a Mason in Staines.  I suspect that they married either in Staines or Sheerness.

Thanks, Viv.
