US Completed Requests / Death Certificate in San Francisco?
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I would like to buy my grandfathers birth certificate. His name is John William Ackroyd, he died in San Francisco, California 6th June 1967 although there is a possibility he died 10th June. I am in Australia and have no idea where to go online to do this. ???  He did have a Social Security number, and is buried in The Greenlawn Cemetery (I think San Mateo County). Born in 1895 at Rotherham, Yorkshire.
Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks for your replies, I do have those details you have mentioned.
It puzzles me why he was there as I assumed he committed some sort of offense.
He does have 5 siblings i know of and his father was still living and tentatively I think his father had a maid though that needs further investigating.
I do know he went to the States via Canada....and he deserted a wife and young child in Yorkshire.
He did die in the States - San Francisco 1967, and my mother was one of 2 children he had in his 2nd marriage there.
I have a fair amount of info and documents but this is one of my stumbling blocks. He was a POW in Schneidemuhl Camp in Germany now Poland ( i have a couple of documents,a photo and a postcard to support this)after the School and before going to Canada.
I know of the football career ( I have a team photo) also and he also was in the Canadian Legion in San Francisco.
I decided to post on here as I am stumped on where else to find the info for his admission to this School. I do have a fair amount of general info about Saltley ( and others places like this)though.
I also know about the Bank of Montreal...Mum had an excellent memory and many documents about her father which i now have. There's just chunks of his life I have had to un-bury that she did not know of..
Thanks for your replies...

Warwickshire Lookup Requests / Saltley Reformatory/renamed Norton Boys Home 1911
« on: Thursday 05 June 14 07:16 BST (UK)  »
I am hoping someone is able to find why my grandfather was admitted to this boys home.
The 1911 census shows him as an inmate at age 15yo.
His name is John William Ackroyd born May 8th 1895 at Rotherham Yorkshire.
On the census under the column "Nationality " etc. there is a number in red - 037.
Thank you for any help in advance-(sometimes I am unable to get online soon after posting)...so apologies if I am slow in responding.  :-\
Once again thank you ....  :)

World War Two / Info wanted for Grandpas photo..
« on: Thursday 11 October 12 09:28 BST (UK)  »
I do know my grandfather was a P.O.W. He was captured by the Germans and his home country was England.

Grandpa John William Ackroyd is the one standing. Mum once said this was a German man sitting. But that does not make sense to me.
As far as i can determine he was in WWll.Born 1895 Rotherham, Yorkshire. He did serve with the Royal Warwickshire regiment. I also have his Certificate of Protection paper with the words 'repatriated prisoner of war' on this. Dated 1919.
Without checking my paper records I think Schneidemühl was the place he was held - but do not quote me on that right now!
I do also know from a photo i have from archives that not only did he play football in the civilian world but i have a photo ( they used these as postcards during the war) of him as a P.O.W. in camp with a football and football uniform on.
But I would like to know why or what is the meaning of this photo? What is the uniform of both men...and IS mum correct? and if so why a photo with an English and German in uniform? I just wish to understand what the photo actually means...
Thank you for any help........blonders

Brilliant - and fast!

Thank you for your replies and they sound like my Grandfather.

Indeed my grandfather was married to Edith Watson - and he left her and a baby behind in Yorkshire. My mother never knew of her half sister until the year 2000 when i found them.

He took off to the States on his own and the Edith you see in San Fransisco census is actually my grandmother Marjory whom he reportedly married under his first wife's name. One of those children is my mother and she came to Australia here as a war bride.

Honestly my cousins in the states have always known her as grandma Edie.

But i know now my grandma Marjory cook was on the same ship namely SS Athenia!
Marjory was on this ship 1924 and dated either May or June it is hard to tell.

Janinez I don't know where the record is you are looking at but does it have a date please?

Once again thanking you both veryyyyyy much - if i could hug you i would!

G'day
I have been trying to get this information on my Grandfather for some time and have decided to bite the bullet and ask for help.

My Grandfathers name is John William Ackroyd (also known as Jack Ackroyd)born in Rotherham Yorkshire England 1895.I know he went from England and ended up living in the US the rest of his life after supposedly by ship going to Canada first then reportedly going across the border from there. I think- don't quote me- he went by ship from Glasgow to Quebec.

I know of the Canadian Archives site where it is free but for the life of me i have paged through each page and not found it as yet.

On Ancestry(.com and on .ca) he is listed as Jack Ackroyd and then in brackets also known as John William.
I have previously used the free trial on Ancestry and cannot afford to pay a subscription just to find this detail.

Would someone kindly be able to look this up for me if at all possible?

On a side note I have found my Grandmothers details on the Canadian Archives in these specific  files as it was reported this is how these 2 met before going onto the States together.

Thanking you very kindly for any assistance

Have a great day :)
