Longford / Re: John Mara/O'Mara
« on: Friday 01 February 13 00:28 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for your replies. That is definetly him and I did find that information.  I wondered if I paid for a researcher in Ireland to go and see these records if it will give me any more information about him or not. Such as place of birth (trial was Longford but not necessarily from there) his parents names.
I also wondered if it is possible to see the actual transcripts of his trial in Longford and if that tells you anything. Otherwise I guess it ends here.

Guildford Cemetary is not the same as Midland Cemetary ( Midland Cemetary is actually in the suburb of Swan View).
I can't remember but I beleive burials did not start at Midland cemetary until after the 1900'sas Midland was only a small place until the Government railway came.
The current Guildford cemetary is in South Guildford near Kalumunda Road.
There are earlier cemetaries in Guildford that made way for housing and some older burials at the Grammar School of earlier settlers.

Carlow / McDonald John/Mary Ford Carlow 1853
« on: Wednesday 30 January 13 23:26 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
this is a long shot but all the information we have and a dead end.
My ancestors were John McDonald and his wife Mary (Ford) who arrived as assisted passengers to Western Australia in 1853 on board the ship Clara.
They came here with children Catharine, Patrick, John and James.
It is beleived they were from Carlow. They were definetly Irish.
John is listed as an agricultural labourer.
All sources say that they were "staunch Catholics".
Mary was probably born around 1808. Not sure about John.
Sorry thats all I have to go on but you never know.
Thank you very much.

Longford / John Mara/O'Mara
« on: Wednesday 30 January 13 23:13 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
still seeking desperatly any information regarding John Mara (O'Mara) convicted at Longford in December 1850 for stealing two quarters of flour. Then held for three years at Newgate, Dublin until
sailing as a convict to Western Australia on The Phoebe Dunbar.
He was around twenty at conviction. He changed his name to O'Mara once free.
His mother may have been a Margaret Flyn but that is unconfirmed.
If no one has any information I would love advice on where to look next. Trial papers or where I might find letters to him in Dublin (although a slim shot as he was illiterate.) Some of his children  born here were called John, William, Margaret, Clara, just in case that helps.
Thanks in anticipation.

Cork / Re: McGrath - Knockagarry Mitchelstown Cork
« on: Wednesday 30 January 13 22:42 GMT (UK)  »
Hi I am in Australia and just came upon this interesting McGrath discussion. I am hoping members can point me on where I can get more help. I am looking at my ancestor who was an Irish convict to Australia named Edward Regan Mcgrath (used the name Mcgrath and Regan) Mainly dropped the Mcgrath. I beleive he was the Edward Regan listed and tried in Clonmel in 1851 for cow stealing. He is listed as Edward Regan but on previous convictions also at Clonmel it says(alias Migrath) so I think he used both names. He stole the cow from John Power. Possibly his mother was married twice to a Mcgrath and a Regan.
I have reason to beleive his parents may be Maria and Michael, although not confirmed (either Regan or Mcgrath) and I know from a letter around 1866 it states "Your Aunt Margaret is still in Michelstown yet).
I see Michelstown is close to Clonmel where his trial took place.
Can anyone let me know who I can contact or write to to find out where there may be more information on this person. Maybe at Clonmel prison as he appears to have been in and out for various things since age 14 before the big cow steal. Presumably due to the famine.
It would be appreciated. If it helps he called his children in Oz Mary Briget, Sarah Ann, William, James, Ellen and Elizabeth. He was born in about 1832 which is a match for the prison records.
Thanks in anticipation.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Rakich's Whitianga
« on: Wednesday 23 November 11 03:20 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you everyone for your hard work. I have managed to find great information from the museum and am going to get the book "Saltspray and Sawdust" plus they have some photocopies of pictures that I hope they will send me.

I know Mate went to NZ in 1908, however I still do no know when Ivan and Eva arrived and
when they left-perhaps it is in that file.

I am also still looking for the humerous stories book -hopefully it will be a in the library but she is away at the moment.

I now know that Ivan and Eva (known as Ivy) have a child buried in Whitianga named George. They also had a child Matilda and she must have died somewhere also as she did
not come to Western Australia.
One day I hope to travel to place some flowers on George's grave. No one there for him now.
THanks everyone.

Ireland / Re: Irish Prison Records now online
« on: Sunday 20 November 11 01:04 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you for you info.
Does anyone know if my convict John O'Mara who was convicted in Longford in 1850 but did not travel to Western Australia until 1853 would have been likely held at
Mountjoy prison. Or would it more likely be a local.

He left on the Phoebe Dunbar in 1853 and I beleive it may have sailed from Dublin so hoping he was there for a time.
