The Common Room / Re: 'Yeoman of the Crossbows'

Thank you jorose for your suggestion and for the links.  It certainly fits with Dr Hewerdine's reference to the 'Archers of the Guard'.

The Common Room / 'Yeoman of the Crossbows'
« on: Friday 19 September 25 05:18 BST (UK)  »
A man I am researching was a 'Yeoman of the Crossbows' in the mid 1500s, during reign of Henry VIII.  I've tried various searches but can't find out how someone came by that title or what their job or role was, etc.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
PS Please let me know if there's a more appropriate board

Rosie, just an update to say that WFHS kindly advised the source of the transcript of the MI.  The details were taken from a book by Aubrey, the antiquarian; unfortunately no family information was given.

I still hope to one day to see a photo of the MI.

Thanks again for your help.

Thank you Rosie, I will try your suggestion and will let you know how I get on.

However, I am still hoping (and would be very grateful if) someone could visit the church / churchyard as well, as explained in my initial post.

Thanks again

Wiltshire / South Wraxall (Wilts) Church
« on: Sunday 26 January 25 07:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have located reference to a monumental inscription (MI) on FindMyPast - record set: Wiltshire Memorial Inscription Index, which is sourced from Wilts Family History Soc.

Whilst helpful, the FindMyPast entry does not give an actual transcript nor the location of the monument.

I have checked the book, Monumental Inscriptions of Wiltshire 1822 but the entry I am interested in is not listed.  Given that the date of death (i.e. 1664) was well before 1822, it seems odd that the MI is not mentioned.  Perhaps the MI was simply overlooked in 1822, or is it possible the memorial was erected after 1822?

I would be very grateful if someone could visit the church / churchyard and transcribe fully / photograph the MI for me.  (It seems the PRs for South Wraxall only start from 1672 and the BTs for 1664 are missing, so I am hoping the MI will provide additional family clues.)

The MI is for:  William Awbrey - died 8 Jan 1664.

Thank you

I am hoping someone can advise whether the Sydney Daily Telegraph newspaper for the year 2009 is available to view online.  (I tried to search but the link that I used said the page was no longer available.)

Thank you for any advice you can give.

Yes, that's one version.  Thank you so much, and thanks for alerting me to the resources available on Family Search.

Gloucestershire / Visitation of Gloucestershire 1682/83-84

I have tried to locate a copy (or transcription) of the Visitation of Gloucestershire 1682-84. I have found a free version on Google books but as best I could see, it is not the entire book, only 28 or 29 pages.  (I have never previously used Google books so maybe I'm doing something wrong.)

I would appreciate help locating a full online copy, if one is available.  Alternatively, if you have access to the publication, I would be grateful for a 'look up'.

Thank you, Jo
