Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: Stephen KESSELL Marriage

Hi
I have put down my family tree for some time but have picked it up again just recently and reformatting all my information.  Yes we are researching the same family line Trish.  You indicated that you are descended from Caroline who is the daughter of John and Mary Ann one of their sons was William John which is the line that I am descended from.  And their parents where Stephen Kessel and Elizabeth Pollard.  I have quite a bit of information on John and Mary Ann and documents, letters etc that I am happy to share etc.  I also have quite a bit of information that I have gathered on your family line over the time that isn't really the line I am researching but I happen to have collected it in my travels anyway.  Not sure if youa re based in NZ but I am based in Invercargill.

Kind Regards

Debbie

Hi Again Fizzy

RE HENRY LAITY

This is absolutely fascinating. I have spent many hours trying to find an angle on this family and had the Goldsworthy information but nothing before and record of Mary Kessel and Joseph Goldsworthys marriage and presumed he had been married before and she had presumed care of the other children when he died.

Can you tell me where you found the information regarding Henry Laity and Elizabeth Kessel and your summation of the situation does seem to be an options and probably quite logical.

I am interested to find the birth information for William Henry Kessel to be certain he was named Kessel when born.

This is all very interesting to me as this Kessel line that I am researching thus far comes to me through my grandmother and this side of the family came directly from Cornwall to Invercargill.

The Stephen Kessell family line that I am researching comes to me through my grandfather and I am interested to learn if they connect at some stage back in Cornwall and this family came directly from Cornwall to the West Coast of NZ.

It is late tonight so will look at this tomorrow with fresh eyes.

I truly appreciate all the information and guidance that you have and can provide.

Many thanks

Debbie

HI Fizzy and Trish

RE STEPHEN / JOHN KESSELL

Thank you so muchn for all your work - I am very new to this and have be spending many hours trying to get myself sorted.

I spent four hours with my grandmother yesterday (in her 80s) and got pages of family information from her so have a lot to work with but nothing this far back.

With regards to John Kessell the 1861 census information you found Trish will be correct.

1861 Census
Kea, Cornwall
RG9/1563/5
John, Mary Ann and Elizabeth.

We have an old family letter that gives the details of their move to New Zealand has they moved to New Zealand with three children:
Elizabeth born 1860
Caroline born 1861
Martin born abt 1863
thus I believe the census information above will be correct and will then hopefully connect with the Census information for Stephen.  They were all miners here in the West Coast of NZ and thus is also another connection.

Fizzy - your marriage information would seem correct and tie the Stephen Connection also.  I am interesting in the births you found Mary Jane and Caroline.  Caroline is correct from the information I have but Mary Jane appears to be before their marriage and did not come to NZ with them - I wonder if that is the other John and Mary Ann Kessell that has been made mention of below.

I will have a look at these details myself on the Cornwall OPC.  (I can get these online right - do you know if there is more information that we can order other than the details available online or will that be all the detail there is.

Can you also tell me which is the best sit to look at this information on the IGI index.

Many thanks

Debbie

Hi

I wonder if you would be able to tell me the children and family of Stephen and Elizabeth Kissell.  I think his son might be John Kessell/Kissell( birth ab 1836) who emigrated to NZ and I am a descent of their line.  I think John married Mary Ann Pollar and so interested to see if Elizabeth and Mary Ann may have any connection also if this is correct.

I am also trying to trace William Henry Kissell on another line in my family whose father was Henry Laity but have found no trace of him before his marriage.  I think that he might have changed his name for a time to William Henry Goldsworthy whilst his mother Mary was married to Joseph Goldsworthy but changed it once Joseph died.

Any information you are able to share would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Debbie Fahey - nee Kissell

Hi

Regarding William Henry Kissell.  I have come to the same conclusion as you regarding his parentage.  I have been unable to connect Henry Laity to whom I presume is Williams mother Mary.  I have found a parish notice for the marriage of Mary Kestle to Joseph Goldsworthy and this is in line with the census details and it appears that William probably changed his name to Goldsworthy when his mother married Joseph Goldsworthy and it appears may have changed his name back to Kissell when Joseph died.

I can find no recrods of Mary Kistle/Kestle/Kissell or William Henry prior to her marrying Joseph Goldsworthy.  I would be interested any information there is of this family prior to her marriage.

William Henry is my 3rd great grandfather on my paternal grandmothers side but of note, my grandfathers family name is also Kissell and they came from Cornwall as well so I am very interested to see if there might be a connection back in the family lines - they came to the West Coast of NZ (and only to Invercargill in recent times) whereas William Henry and his family came to Invercargill NZ.

Thus, I am interested in any Kissell information as I have two lines to follow on my fathers side for the Kissell family.

Many thanks
