That's very helpful and definitely something I will need to look at into more detail.

Thanks

Thanks for that info.  This could quite possibly be the marriage I'm looking for.  Because the 1861 census says their son Thomas was 9, I've been looking for a marriage around 1850.   According to the 1871 census, another son, Thomas, was 10 (so born abt. 1861) and born in Ystalyfera.  I'm now wondering whether the age recorded for Thomas in 1861 is wrong and there was only one son called Thomas.

I think I'll need to order the marriage certificate and see what that says.

Thanks again.

William Evans and Ann Nicholas were my great great grandparents.  Both were born, according to the census records, in Llarthney, Carmarthenshire.  William was born between 1827 and 1832 and Ann was born in about 1835.  I think Ann was the daughter of John and Catherine Nicholas.

I have been unable to find a marriage between William and Ann.  I found them on the 1861 census in Alltygrug in the parish of Llangiwg , Glamorganshire.  I know this is them as Ann's brother, Richard Nicholas, is living with them and he crops again in the later census.  According to the 1861 census, they had one son, Thomas (born abt. 1852 - he was 9 in 1861).  He was born in Carmarthen or more likely the county of Carmarthenshire.  I have searched the marriage indexes for this period and so far I have been unable to locate a marriage between William and Ann.  If Thomas was born in Carmarthenshire, I assume the marriage took place there also.  I know that by 1871 the family had settled in Aberdare (Glamorgan).

Any suggestions how I can go about locating this marriage?

Thanks in advance

Thanks Nick and Ros.  You've both been very helpful.  It's really good to take my Crossman ancestors back further.  I can see a lot of research has been done, so I am very grateful to you both.

Ros, the point you make about the occupations is very interesting - I've just looked at Philip's marriage certificate from 1852 and his father's occupation is labourer, so as you say they were not craftsmen.

Hopefully I can help you out with Philip Oats Crossman, just let me know.  He was my grandfather's grandfather but died twenty years before he was born.

Kind regards
Marc

Hi - this is my first Roots Chat post.  I've read with interest the posts regarding George Crossman (born 1806 in Tavistock).  George was my ggg grandfather.  I am descended from his son Philip Oats Crossman (born c.1830 Ilfracombe).

From my own research I knew that George had married Mary Oates in Ilfracombe and sometime after her death in 1838 returned to Tavistock, presumably because he had family there.  I've read on here that there was some confusion over George's parents, i.e. which George and Elizabeth Crossman were his parents.  Has anybody reached a conclusion over George's parents?  Perhaps somebody can enlighten me.

Thanks

Marc
