Kent / Fill/Field Westwell Kent
« on: Sunday 30 March 25 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

I would appreciate some help with this one please - my FILL/FIELD family seem to have been settled in Westwell for a time, with my earliest known ancestor being William FIELD  baptised on 7/3/1869 in the same parish.

His parents are listed as John and Anne Field, but I cannot find anything obvious further back for them in Westwell.

The name has been alternating between Fill and Field throughout, and sometimes even File, so not always an easy family to find!

My question is, how do I set about going further back by finding the correct John and Anne Field as they do not appear to be in Westwell, ( unless I have missed them), and if they are in a different parish, with these names being fairly common in Kent, how do I know if I have found the correct family?

Would appreciate any help here,

Many thanks

Hi everyone
could somebody please advise if there is a safe way to write names etc on the back of old black and white photographs.
I am currently moving my photos out of a film over photo album into acid free pockets, but am at a bit of a loss how to label them, as my Mum had written names etc on the writing space in the old album.
Thank you
Gill

I wonder what the incentive was to get them registered early on anyway?
people must have been suspicious of this 'new' system.

Thank you everybody for these replies.
I do feel like I have a greater understanding now of how a registration would have happened.
This particular birth was registered, as a first registration, within six months, but only just!!
Thank you for clearing up the fact that there was no fine at this time.

Thank you. This is how I would have imagined it to be myself.

Thank you Carole, that's an interesting article, especially the bit that registrars were paid to register births. I didn't know that, so maybe my ancestor was chased until he finally got around to registering his child.  :)
