Australia / Re: Honora MEEHAN - what happened to you?
« on: Monday 13 June 11 11:35 BST (UK)  »
hello Tabily :)

(I belong to the same Meehan tree as Tabily).  A quick note, I've got to get back to the study, no time for genie for a while.

I wonder if it was Owen's grandaughter who stole from him?  Grandaughter Ann Meehan was 17-18 y.o in 1857.

I haven't come across many Owen Meehan's, one that was a convict before this one, died before 1855 on either Lord Howe Is or Norfolk Island (where he was working as some kind of police constable).  I noticed an Owen Meehan arrived in ?Sydney Australia 1857 with his wife as an immigrant. They are the only Owen Meehan's I've ever found!  I don't know where he was living, but was only with his wife.
The chances of this being the correct Owen are high, especially considering it is the right place in Sydney.

There are two Hugh MEENEN deaths in NSW bdm.  Neither of them might be them.
Our Meehan's have had incredibly weird spellings, Meenen is a mild variation!

One in the year of Hugh Jnr arrival ...

1855 Hugh MEENEN  44 yrs old (so born abt 1811) no parents listed,  district is blank.
if this is one of them would have to be the father, Hugh Junior was in his 20's

1873 Hugh MEENEN    father: James J,     Mother:  Rose        District: Paddington
This doesn't match with Hugh MEEHAN Jnr parents.
Could be Hugh Senior.

I wonder if Hugh MEEHAN Snr who was already in the colony in 1855 was a convict?
It would be interesting to find his details of where from, wife etc.
I've only had time for a glance ...
convict Hugh MEICHEN 1820 per Neptune.

Just a titbit - a Hugh MEEHAN operated a sawmill at Freshwater Cover early 1800's.

OK Yazzie

good luck.  If I find anything will get back to you.

Lyn

P.S. I just found the Personal Message icon after someone suggesting it.  I haven't frequented these kind of sites.  Not enough time.  Though is handy to have info 'out there' incase someone else stumbles across it while searching.

a bit more, I can't type with the page jumping.

Susan McMAHON's parents

Bernard McMAHON
Susan McKELLAR

They're probably from same County as their daughter Susan McMAHON, County Monaghan, Ireland
They were both deceased when Susan and patrick and their family immigrated to Australia in 1855.

I'm descended from Rose's brother Michael MEEHAN, from his second partner whom he didn't marry,
Johanna SCHUBERT.

Good luck with it all
I'll check back here sometimes.
Hope you come back.  It's been about 4 years since you posted.

Hi Yazzie

I'm Lyn Meehan in Australia. Where are you?

It is Rose MEEHAN
born about 1839 County Cavan, Ireland
father: Patrick MEEHAN - from County Cavan, born about 1816
mother: Susan McMAHON - from County Monaghan, Ireland, born abt 1816/17/18

I'm descended from Rose's brother Michael MEEHAN.

Rose moved with her parents to Liverpool England - probably about 1840.
Patrick and susan had five more children here, one boy died.
They all migrated to Sydney, Australia in 1855 ... and settled in Liverpool !! Sydney, NSW.
Liverpool is now an outer western suburb of Sydney, in those days it would've been a seperate town.

Immigration paid for by Patrick father, Owen Meehan, who was a convict to Sydney in 1832 aboard the ship 'Dunvegan Castle' he got 7 years for stealing a pig in Ireland.  On his convict records, said his wife, Rose HAND was deceased and he had seven children in Ireland.
Patrick is the only one that I'm sure of, I've recently found 2 possible sisters. FROM LYN MEEHAN

Hello Yazzie, I don't know what country you are in.
And it's been 3 years since your post, so I hope you check back.

I'm pretty sure that I have your Rose 'MACO' in my tree.
I have a Rose Meehan born County Cavan, Ireland about 1838.
Her mother:  SUSAN McMAHON !!
Father: Patrick MEEHAN
She moved to Liverpool England with her parents (probably about 1840)
most of the kids were born in Liverpool England.

They all immigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1855 (where one other child was born)
They settled in Liverpool! - a western outer suburb of Sydney now.
Then it would've been a different town west of Sydney.
Patrick's father who was living in Sydney paid for their immigration.
Pat's father, Owen Meehan, was a convict to Australia in 1832.
He stole a pig in Ireland and got 7 years.  His wife Rose HAND was dead and he
had seven children in Ireland.  (Patrick is only one that I'm sure of) recently found 2
probable sisters for Pat.

I haven't been able to find a partner for Rose, now I know why with the weird spelling.
I have found our history in Australia (and England) under Mackin, McKin, Meecham etc etc!

I'm descended from one of Rose's brothers.
When I just check the list of kids I'll post again.          from Lyn Meehan, Australia
