Thanks! As for the book, "Life and Times," I wonder how I might get a copy of it. Thanks for the reference, by the way. Clears up some things, but the birth/christening of Betty Duckworth still remains a mystery, doesn't it.

Lancashire / Wm. Ward, veterinarian of Blackburn, Lancashire
« on: Friday 13 May 11 20:33 BST (UK)  »
Another brick wall (since I had such enthusiastic responses last time I posted ;D). Looking for verification of parents, and hopefully grandparents for this man:

William Ward, b. 3 Apr 1797 Salesbury/Wilpshire, Lancashire (baptism record at St. Mary the Virgin, Blackburn); son of William Ward and Jane
He married Betty Thwaites (daughter of Daniel Thwaites and Betty Duckworth Thwaites) on 10 Oct 1839 at St. Mary the Virgin, Blackburn:
William Ward - full age, veternary, bachelor of Blackburn
Betty Thwaites - full age spinster of Blackburn
Groom's Father: William Ward, Manufacturer
Bride's father: Daniel Thwaites, Brewer
Witnesses: Thomas Thwaites (her brother) and Jim Wilkinson (no idea who he is)

This couple had four children, the eldest being William Ward born 18 oct 1840 in Blackburn (baptism, everything checks out); no problems there. But going backwards:

Looking for the father of William Ward the vet. He was William Ward married to Jane. I've focused on Mellor, since it's the nearest village to Salesbury and Wilpshire, and there are many Wards living there, many named William. (I also like Mellor since it's where the grandson William Ward died in 1919; possibly a family home?) If the location is correct, I found a marriage 14 Jun 1789 of a William Ward and Jane Lund, but it was in Blackburn at St. Mary the Virgin (possible - it's nearby; plus, see below).

Also found a burial of a 2 year old child at this same church, Edmund Ward, son of William Ward of Wilpshire on 20 Mar 1793 (b. 1790). A second child was baptised, same church, 2 Oct 1793 (b. 20 Sep 1793) to William and Jane Ward of Wilpshire, and he was named Edmund also (understandable since they'd just lost their first child a few months earlier of the same name).
William Ward, baptised 3 May 1797, same church, son of William Ward and Jane of Wilpshire
Jane Ward, baptised 21 May 1806, same church, daughter of William Ward and Jane of Wilpshire

This family works nicely. But I haven't been able to pin down the parents of either William Ward of Wilpshire or his wife Jane (maybe Lund - can't find a Jane Lund the right age in that area).

Thoughts?  ;D

Many thanks,
Sally in Virginia

I should  have said earlier that the sisters Mary and Ellen came from christening records in Haslingden, Lancashire when I was going on the assumption that Betty's father was Lawrence Duckworth, mother was Mary, all of Haslingden. This made sense to me since her daughter Betty Thwaites Ward died at a family home in Haslingden, occupied by that time by her daughter Alice Thwaites Thompson (1891). If all of you good folks are correct, I've been in the wrong neighborhood. Betty Duckworth Thwaites always appeared in the census as being born in Blackburn, so that could mean either Great Harwood or Haslinden, right?
I am prepared to let Mary and Ellen Duckworth go; they're both from Haslingden and their father was Lawrence.
Thwaites Brewery histories state Betty Duckworth was the sole heir and proprieter of her father's brewery venture with Messrs. Clayton and Dutton, so that's a problem with Grace being the eldest and also living possibly until 1855, and apparently never married. So is it possible Grace is not a daughter of Edward and Betty, but rather another relative buried in their grave site? Or perhaps Betty was chosen as heir over sister Grace for reasons other than who was the elder?  Maybe Grace wasn't into beer?? ???
The purchasers of the Roebuck Inn in 1897 (Thomas Duckworth in Rishton) were T. and W. Thwaites, of Blackburn. These would probably be nephews of Daniel Thwaites (son of Betty Duckworth and Daniel Thwaites), the millionnaire owner of Thwaites Brewery and Eanam Brewery. His heir was his only child and husband named Yerburgh.
I'll  have to scrap my baptism of Betty Duckworth (Jan 1785, Haslingden) as it's based on a father called Lawrence.
Many thanks! I'll keep on plugging away.

I am deeply grateful for all this input -- and a bit overwhelmed. I'd actually found some of that information, after visiting the matterdale and cottontown sites. I'd assumed her father's name was Lawrence Duckworth, from a baptism record in 1785, Haslingden. Then read a portion of a biography about her famous brother Daniel Thwaites, and found the father's name Edward.  :-\ Just wasn't able to prove either one, and never found a wife/mother. I'll follow the lines suggested and see where it leads me.
Again, humble thanks.

Lancashire / Duckworth family in Lancashire

Edward Duckworth, born 1756 in Lancashire, partnered in the brewery business with William Clayton and another gentleman named Dutton. That brewery became the Thwaites Brewery when his oldest daughter and heir married Daniel Thwaites. Does anyone have information on Edward Duckworth's family? Who did he marry? Who were his parents? His eldest daughter, Betty Thwaites, is my ancestor. He also had daughters Mary, Grace, and Ellen.
Thanks!

Hi Ian,
Following the "reply" instructions above, here I am. I tried your e-mail address, and am not sure it went through. Just in case, I'll repeat what I said here. If you feel fairly certain that your Henry's parents were Patrick and Jane Clark, then I think we have a nice family connection here. I'm 99 percent sure they are Elizabeth's parents, based on her death certificate information.
I'd like to share her line with you, if you agree we have a connection, and would be pleased to know what you have on Henry's descendants. Elizabeth Clark is an interesting story, as they all are, right? Seems she never married the rather upper class father of her two (three?) children, and in 1898 she came to New York City with two of them. Her oldest daughter, Lilly, married a Carlisle man (Allan Cassidy) and that couple came to New York in 1891. They are the grandparents of my husband, whom he never knew.
Looking forward to hearing your confirmation, and will be sad if you feel we're not on the same line (but I'll get over it).
Thanks!
Sally

I came upon this thread today; although it's old, I hope I can tap into what ipshalapata has found. Perhaps answer some of my own questions about the Henry Clark of Carlisle and his family.
First, I'm not positive my Henry and yours are the same, but he's the only one I could find at the appropriate time and place. My connection to Henry Clark is through his parents, Patrick and Jane Clark, both born c. 1811 in Ireland, immigrated to Wigton area about 1840. 1841 census shows Patrick and Jane Clark with children Anne and Eleanor (both born Ireland), Henry, born 1841. 1851 shows the addition of Elizabeth and Margaret, born 1846 and 1848. My ancestor is Elizabeth Clark, who went into service and came to Blackburn, Lancashire before 1871.  It looks like several of her sisters also went into service here and there, as did Henry for a time. I found that same 1871 census in Carlisle showing Henry and Sarah and their three children, and then there was nothing (as you have found).
I'd be very interested to learn whether your Henry seems to spring from the same parents as my Elizabeth (I know her parents' names from her death certificate in New York City).
If I'm completely off base with this Henry (YOUR Henry), and you can tell me why, I'd appreciate it. Otherwise . . ..
Many Thanks.
Sally
