Ireland / Re: National Archives of Ireland - Poor Law Union

OK so, first trip to the National Archives today. Secured the coveted Readers ticket from the Duty Archivist - a delightful lady who ensured every chance was afforded to this day being ordained a special one... and it was. My interest was the Poor Law Workhouses in South & North Dublin. I diligently viewed 18 months of early 1900 South Dublin indoor registers on micro-film and found one third of the Holy Grail for my father's tree.... such documentary order, such soul-searching success. Ms Duty Archivist, I thank you.
As for the rest of you land-lubbing quest-seekers, get thee down to the National Archives...

Hi there, Wondering whether you received any help with this Neil? I'm planning first trip to Bishop Street Archives to search North and South Union workhouse registers.

Can anybody share whether they have found these searches to be accessible and/or fruitful?

Cheers,

Hi hully,

I found the following entry in Griffith's Valuation for a Patrick Leaden from 1859. There is also one for a Peter Leaden in the same Cahore townland.

Griffiths Valuation Record Information

  Tenant  : Patrick LEADEN
  Landlord  : Hugh LANE
  County : LONDONDERRY
  Barony:  Loughinsholin
  Union:  Magherafelt
  Parish:  Ballynascreen
  Townland: Cahore
  Printing Date : 1859
  Sheet Number  40  / Map Ref.  41

Could this be a relation?

PS this is a great site for GV - it presents a view of the original entries and the associated maps.  link

Cheers.

Hi there hully1,

Try the following link for info on Castledawson, Derry from 1910.

http://www.libraryireland.com/UlsterDirectory1910/Castledawson.php

Two entries under inhabitants may be of interest:
Louden, James, cattledealer
Louden, Patrick, butcher.

Dublin / Orphanages / Workhouses / Industrial Schools 1911

Hello there, can anybody help with information on orphanages/ workhouses/ industrial schools for both boys and girls which were active in Ireland in 1911. Was it common for Dublin children to be sent to provincial locations? Are there any public sources of info other than Census?

Dublin / Deegan & Cullen ancestors Dublin
« on: Sunday 17 July 11 18:54 BST (UK)  »
Hello there, I'm looking to fill in some gaps in my family history on my father's side.

My grandfather was William Deegan b. 1902 to James Deegan and Mary Anne Cullen while living at North Gloucester Place, Dublin. My grandfather had (at least) eight siblings as follows:

Dorothela/Dora/Dorothy b. 1895
Elizabeth b. 1896
Patrick b. 1899 & d. 1908
James b. 1900
Kathleen b. 1903
Michael d. 1904
Margaret b. 1906 d. 1907
John b. 1908 d. 1908.

I have 1901 census records for the family. My grandmother died in 1908 probably in childbirth after which I understand that the remaining sons were sent to Artane industrial school. However, I cannot find any trace of them in the 1911 census records at this establishment (although I have observed some gaps in the listings of 'boarders').

I cannot find any trace of the remaining girls in the 1911 census either and have evidence that at least two of them - Dora and Kathleen - lived past 1911.

My great-grandfather re-married in 1909 to Margaret/Maggie Fagan and they had (at least) two children - Eliza Deegan b. 1909 and James Deegan b. 1910. They lived in Abbey Cottages off Abbey Street, Dublin.

I believe my great-grandfather's mother was Dora Deegan (possibly nee Keating or Kearns/Cairns).

My grandfather William Deegan married Alice Holloway in 1922 and they lived in 113 Dorset Street and subsequently in Brennan's Cottages at the back of 117 Dorstet Street, Dublin.

Would be most interested to hear of anybody who has information on any of these descendants or who is interested in exploring possible links.
