Hi George, you might try Alan himself. His email address is alan.spence@xtra.co.nz . If that is old mail me (clive.minton@gmail.com) and I will send you an address. That makes us 3rd cousins by the way.

My mistake, Trish. Thanks. Cousin to Leah Hopes Bright. Leah Bright is possibly, perhaps probably, daughter to George's sister, Martha Bright b1802.

Leah doesn't seem to appear in the 1841 census. The only record I have of her is her marriage in Ardington in 15 May 1842 to John Embling. They emigrated about 2 weeks later from London to NZ on the 'St George'. The marriage certificate gives her age as 21. Her Monumental Inscription in NZ in 1895 says she was 76 at death (b1819). She may have overstated her age on her marriage, even by several years. She gave no parents for the Certificate.

My purpose in posting is to try and find a baptismal record for Leah. Martha Bright has two children baptised at Ramsbury, in Jan 1830 and Jan 1832, in her own maiden name. She married in Feb 1832 and moved with her husband to Wantage, near Ardington. She herself was also baptised at Ramsbury. The previous posting to you gives two baptismal possibilities, under different surnames, at Ramsbury.

Thanks for that. I have looked into them but still hope for a 'Bright' entry in the register. Leah Hopes Bright is her niece.

If anyone has access to the Ramsbury PRs, could you look please up the baptism of a Leah Bright, or any Leah, after about 1818 until 1830. She may be a 'base born' entry. I want to know the mother's and father's names if mentioned, date and any other information entered.

Thank you!

Yes, I have seen Alan's book. Thanks for your offer. I just wanted to check those letters myself. I think I already asked him about them. He also relied on Mum's work. The idea of Leah's background all sounds quite probable, especially as Martha Bright and her family moved from Ramsbury to Wantage, nearby John Embling, perhaps on her wedding in 1832.

Both families, John's and Leahs, were of very humble means. I found Thomas Moody in 1841 in Workhouse Row in Wantage, working as a Hawker. The emigration opened up profound changes for them, not to mention their descendants!

Best wishes.

Well, I wonder if you or Joanne have any inkling of where those letters to Leah might be. I would love to see them before they get lost, if they aren't already. Any ideas? I grew up not knowing even of the existence of Charles, or George, Carter and their families, only the daughters. Don't know why.

With best wishes,
Clive

Hi Fullback, delighted to find your post, 12 months after you put it up. Leah Bright is my gggrandmother. She is difficult to trace! My mother, some years ago, tried to uncover her background by interviews in Leah's Embling family and through documentary research. She made reference in her notes to letters to Leah by relatives in the UK, perhaps the same ones you mention? I have not seen these letters, knowing of them only by reference. Perhaps you are one of the NZ Emblings?

So your post is very interesting to me. I would be delighted to finally see content of the letters if that is possible. My mother's Notes , documents and family photos were dispersed after her death, some going to the Howick Historical Society and some returning to me several years ago.

Are you still involved in this research? You might have seen this photo I attach?

Did you make any progress with the family of William Coleman born Grendon? Your messages are some time ago now. He was born Jun 1808 in Grendon, the 3rd son of Edward and Catherine Coleman of Dordon near Grendon and died in Nov 1876. Perhaps you have photos of him or his family?
