Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: Henry Ashbrook and Mary Lumley

I'm not actually related: because there aren't many Ashbrooks I've tried to collect together as many as I can, and this is one where I feel I should be able to get further and am struggling, and thought someone familiar with Yorkshire might be able to help break through.

There is a Mary Lumley baptised 8 Sep 1822 at Topcliffe By Thirsk, to George and Elizabeth Lumbley. Our Mary's information on the 1851 census would make her born 1821 in Thirsk, so the above looks like a good fit, but I have no idea how common Lumley is in the area, and don't have any definite link.

I think this might be a case where I have to wait for Yorkshire's records for the period they were married to come online, or hope that I end up in York for some reason eventually, and pop into the records office.

Thank you all for your attempts to help,

Thank you very much everyone!
I have Henry in 1871 as a widower, and 1881 in the workhouse.
There is a son Henry born 1844 who died young, and then another son Henry born 1848.
There is 17 years between Mary and Maria's birth dates, which suggests that they are different women, not just a misspelling, so it looks like Mary Nee Lumley died somewhere between 1851 and 1861.

Hi,
I'm trying to find the marriage of Henry Ashbrook and Mary Lumley to find out Mary's father's name. I believe they were married in the first quarter of 1844 in St Saviour, York. I want to track down who Mary was.
Thank you,
David

Buxton: The area south of the Wye (Upper Buxton and the Market Place) was in the ecclesiastical parish of Bakewell, and north of the Wye was in the parish of Hope.
Hope this helps

Thank you

I'd suggest maybe one set of grandparents were Methodist and it was done to please them. Or the family could have been on hard times and were receiving charity from the Methodists? I know of people who were totally RC, but baptised children as Methodist because they received food and boots.  Not in Cheshire, but something similar could occur?

I've just re-read and realised that her father died just before she was born. I could definitely see a newly widowed mother getting support from anyone who would give it!

Looks like a really interesting set of records, but just wondering how people are using it for their family tree? I have a few potential matches, but I'm not sure how to make sure they are 'mine'. I hope others are having more success!

Cheshire / Samuel Hughes Anderton
« on: Tuesday 08 January 13 21:02 GMT (UK)  »
I was wondering if anyone was related to Samuel Hughes of Anderton, Son of Samuel and Sarah Anne Hughes, of Anderton Cottage, Anderton.

I was going through some of my great grandfathers old things, and I have the newspaper clipping of his funeral service and a pair of letters from Samuel's sister Bertha to my great granddad.

If someone is related I'd be happy to send them a scan of the letters, my grandma still has the originals.  If no one appears I plan on adding a page on my site to him. And I've just found an illuminated certificate ( http://www.carlscam.com/warmem/anderton.htm ).

I doubt that I'll ever fully understand religious matters!

Neither will I!

As an update I've looked at the abode on the baptisms of all of Samuel's (Sr) children, and his first two children were not born at Whitehall, John (1815, Normanwood) and William (1817, Taxal). I'm not sure if Normanwood is in Derbyshire or Cheshire, but it's just to the west of Fernilee
