Hello Jew and Palace Dave

As you are both mentioning the Gomm grave in Queens road cemetery, Irene & Thomas Gomm are my parents. My mum's maiden name was Taylor  her parents are Flora and Alfred Taylor, Flora's maiden name was Mills and her fathers name was Cooper also the family  went under the name of Williams, from the family of Samuel Cooper of Crystal Palace.

Alfred is also buried with his brother Daniel and wife Jane Cooper which is the Taylor/cooper family who come from Notting Hill as well as Croydon.

The other people in the grave is my mums brother, sister and brother-in-law.

If I can be of any help do not hesitate to ask as I did do a lot of work on my family tree at one time but due personal reasons have not done much in the last 5 yrs but always keeping a eye on things .

Hi Rank Gorger
Just to throw another thought in to this, some of the Coopers from Wilford Road also went under the name of Williams, and were related to Samuel Cooper of Crystal Palace. He died in a fire trying to put out a chimney fire with his son Nelson  I am not sure of the dates at moment as not done any research for a long long time.
hope this is of some help

I remember going to a talk by Vivien Lovett in Croydon, as I went to school with children of the same name all in the West Croydon area.

I have just Googled Vivien's name and there is an article dated Jan 09 in the Croydon Gardian about  her father Bill who died December 08 and his connections with Surrey Street market.

She is writing a  new book on Wallington and was requesting information here telephone number was quoted as a contact as 0208655 8581 hope this is of some help.

Have you tried to contact Croydon Local archives, as I had a death in Norwood in 1855 and they have all newspapers on film even the ones before The Advertiser. Although newspapers going back that far only seem to be very restricted on what they report but it's worth a try.

Hi Nikki

Have a look at your local county record office for hawkers or peddlers licences these are some times kekt in the quarters sessions record.

About the marriage if like mine they some times never married and if you know the mothers maiden name look at that option  also as the child could be registered under her name, two of my famlies I have use both the mothers and farthers name at diffrent times.

Travelling People / Re: Romany history

I have got to say that I am a member of the Romany & Travelers FHS and my £8.00 a year is well spent.

Unlike other family history societies we are a small and friendly group that are tracing our roots and we  are over a wide area.

The society like all others are run by VOLUNTEERS who are not paid for the work they do they manage to hold 4-5 open days a year. One is this Saturday 10th June at Bedford and the only one they charge for during the year  as there are two speakers, music and lunch also all this for only £15 for members.

The next one will be in Exeter later on in the year were they will have the research  and this is also a day to catch up with old friends because that is what we have all become and Janet Keet-Black and the committee have done a wonderful job.

If any of you think you can do better I am sure she would please to receive articles for the journal about your Gypsy ancestors.

Sorry about the rant by I have been tracing my Gypsy families for over 10 years and have appreciated all the help I have received from the RTFHS.
