Gloucestershire / Re: Lemoir - Letchford - Huge skeleton in the family closet!!!!

I have just discovered your post of 2 yrs ago, and was very interested to read your discovery.
Percy Thomas Luetchford was my great uncle, my grandmother Violet Lucy was his older sister.
It would seem that after the death of Jane from Typhoid following the birth of her 7th child,in Sialkot in what was then east Bengal, Edward returned to the UK and the surviving children were "adopted" by Janes sisters, Lucy Edwards took in my grandmother and auntie May, and Charlotte your grandfather. I was intrigued by your photos of I assume Percy. I have several photos of people with my grandmother from the 20s and30s and I would dearly love to put names to faces! Is there some way I could send these to you to see if you could identify them?

I need  lists for 1810 to about 1824 from probably Halifax to England. Also is it likely that a wife would have accompanied a sailor on a ship?
Thanks

Canada Lookup Request / Re: salvery records for Nova Scotia
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 23:23 BST (UK)  »
Thanks again.
i am planing a trip to N.S. so I will be able to do some more in depth research. I am really mad at myself for not saving the information I read, as I think it will definitely shine some light on our mysterious Sarah. She is in England on the 1841 census, but I need to verify if this is the same Sarah. On the marriage bond is a Robert Rudd, who I am guessing is not her father.
So far i have not found the same record that I saw, but will keep trying.

Canada Lookup Request / salvery records for Nova Scotia

Hi there,
I am very new to research and consequently seem to go round in circles!. My latest problem is accessing slavery records for Nova Scotia, Canada, between 1790 and 1810.
I researched a marrige bond for Joseph Coppin, who I think is probably my 3x great grandfather, and found such a contract with a Sarah Wilkison. The bond was also signed by a Robert Rudd. the date 28th July 1810. In searching in other records at the same time and I cannot remember where, I also found records in a hand written ledger of slave records for Nova Scotia. A Sarah Wilkison was mention several times and registered as a mulato. Stupidly I did not . record and have no idea how I found it. I have tried every thing I can think of and its driving me nutds.\, as I know I read this record but i can't find it now! Please can you help me.
thanks

Hi Louise,
Yes I agree about not being completely abandoned. Interestingly enough we discovered Edward as Edward Bates, nephew at his grandparents on the 1861  census, so i imagine this was to cover the shame! Edward ended up in Ashton under Lyne. An Edward Bates named as father on the birth record, seems to be from Ashton under Lyne, but we have not corroborated this yet. As you say lots of surprises.
Good luck with your research.
Rosemary :)

good morning Louise
Thank you for the information. there are 3 columns after names, age, class and ward; It was the middle number that intrigued me, obviously some kind of code for circumstances. Given that Mary Ann was giving birth to a child out of wedlock, I can only suspect that she was in the workhouse infirmary, to give birth to Edward. It is very sad when one sees the terrible circumstances some people are in, whole families are are relegated to a life of poverty. Fortunately from what we are finding Mary Ann married in 1861and had three more children. She was our g.g. grandmother . Edward was brought up by his grandparents!
Happy researching, my sister and I are fascinated with this whole process.

Hi Louise,
Thanks so much for the web site.
I hit the jackpot and found
Edward's mother Mary Ann Luetchford age 22 in the workhouse. 9th November 1858. "Pregn to be examn. remains"
Do you know if there is a way to find out what the category numbers mean; also who are the people referring the inmates?
thx again.
JB
