Ayrshire / Burial of John Brown Parish of Ayr
« on: Tuesday 02 January 18 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I have found the death record of a possible ancestor but cannot find the grave:
John Brown, died  5 April 1852 in Wallacetown (buried 7 April 1852), OPR parish 578 Ayr (aged 73).

I have copies of monumental inscriptions for St Quivox, 6 Kyle Graveyards (Culzean,Fairfield,Coodham, St Margarets, Newton-on-Ayr and Barnwell), Newton Green, Ayr Auld Kirk, Wallacetown,Alloway and Secessionist Graveyard Ayr -  I received them from the Ayrshire Family History Society. But none of these have a record of this death.

(In the 1841 and 1851 census John Brown was living in Wallacestown and was listed as having been born in Ayr, Ayrshire. He had been a sea navy pilot. )

Any advice on how to proceed would be gratefully received.
Regards.

Ireland / Alfred Alford and Margaret Dunbar marriage
« on: Thursday 20 July 17 23:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help..
I am trying to find the marriage record of Alfred Alford, woodcarver born c1817 in London and Margaret Dunbar, born in Dublin 1828.
Their children Alfred and Frances Margaret were baptised on 20 June 1848 in St Annes, Shankill, Belfast and then Emma and Flora were baptised on 10 August 1850 at St Georges, Belfast, and finally Alfred and Anna Maria were baptised on 20 October 1859 in Ballymena.

They must have moved round but I know that they settled in Derry and Alfred died there in 1865.

I just can't find any marriage record, presumably between 1844 and 1847 anywhere.

Any help appreciated.

Derry (Londonderry) / Robert Hamilton Brown

Hello A Brown,

Do you happen to have details of Robert H Brown's soldier's record?? If we had a reference of some kind we could see what he did in WW1.
You previously said that you knew that his record stated that he was in Walton Villas in Liverpool in 1915. As he was born in 1858 he would have been 57 in 1915..

Thanks,
Kipper.

Hello, and thanks for the replies on the graveyards. I sent off for graves listings of about 6 burial grounds local to Wallacetown/Newton but couldn't find anything on the relatives I was looking for. I've looked at Scotlandspeople and Ancestry and just can't find the death records. I just need them so that I can ascertain my relative's parents' details (Alexander Brown, b 1818/9 in Parish of Ayr with parents John and Mary Brown. There are census records probably for them in Wallace town, Ayr in 1841 and 1851 but I would like to dig further and make sure I'm on the right track. I just can't find when they died, which would give their parents.)

I was close to Ayr last summer and had an afternoon at the Burns museum outside Ayr, which I enjoyed. I proudly announced to the chap at the museum that I was believed to be descended from the great man, and he said that about 50% of visitors say the same thing!! Never mind.
I drove round the area abit, which was interesting. I was wondering where would be the best records place to investigate that may have records in addition to the Scotlandspeople records/Ancestry records. Maybe death/graveyard records for graveyards I haven't looked at. Possibly at the records office in Glasgow?

sjmccall, re your James Brown.. I am clinging to the fact that I think my James Brown was born in Newton on Ayr c1830. That's where he is on the census' from 1851, 1861 and 1881. Also wife Jane was born in Newton too, c1828. So I fear they are different..

My problem (and yours too) is that there are loads of Browns from the Ayrshire area..
Thanks all,
Kipper

Thanks, Looby.

I think that is James, and I have found that before. I also have the following records:

1861 census:On Wallace St, St Quivox
James Brown 29 Carter (b St Quivox) and wife Jane Brown 33 (b Newton).

1881 census: On 105 Wallace St, St Quivox
James Brown 48 Carter (out of employ), Jane Brown 53 wife, Archibald Stevenson 5 lodger (b Glasgow).

The Burns Monument Centre sounds good, thank you.

But can find nothing else. If their marriage was after 1855 there would be parental info. I just don't know where they went after 1881.

Thank you,  Looby.

I can't find when they died. The last record for them is the 1851 census in Wallacetown/Newton.

I think John may have died before the 1861 census but it's an assumption.
Mary (if she was Mary Shaw) appeared in Troon in the 1871 census with her in-laws, and died there in 1877.

Where would burial records be held for Wallacetown/Newton?

Thanks again.

Ayrshire / Graveyards in Newton/St.Quivox area
« on: Sunday 06 March 16 20:18 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching my family - the Browns in Ayr- for some time but have reached a point where I am stuck as there are just so many of them in the area.

I would like to find the parents/grandparents of John Brown and Mary Brown...

The 1841 census holds the following info:
John Brown 65 Sea Navy Pilot; Mary Brown 45; Alexander Brown 20; Margaret Brown 15; James Brown 10 living on Main St, parish of Newton on Ayr.
Then the 1851 census:
John Brown 65 (b Maybole); Mary Brown 56 (b Maybole); granddaughter Mary Brown 8 on Wallacestreet, Wallaceton, parish of Newton on Ayr.

I have traced the records for son Alexander Brown and also granddaughter Mary Brown, whose records do not give any further info on John and Mary (I can't find Alexander's birth record and he married before 1855 and died in Ireland, where the death record was less detailed and gave nothing on his parents).
Moreover I can't find the birth or marriage record for James Brown and there is no record of him after 1881. And I am not 100% sure about the info I have on Margaret Brown.

I believe Mary Brown's maiden name was either Niven or Shaw (and possibly Niel or Campbell) but without knowing this for sure I can't progress.

I therefore think I would like to now go and look at the graveyards in Newton area, where there may be something on John Brown atleast.
What would be the best graveyards to try if they lived in Wallaceton?

I'm about 4 hours away so it would be a big trip, but probably interesting to see the area atleast and I may find out something.

Thanks.
