Canada Lookup Request / Re: How to find family on passenger lists?

Pages 20 and 24 of that file on Vaclav mentions a "proposed sureity," Stanley Yecny of Esterhazy, which is near Kolin, where a Joh. Salaba and Sophia Yecny lived.  ???

edit: Just searched the OurRoots.ca website...

page 169 of "The History of Atwater, Saskatchewan" says that a Joe Knezacek married Sophia Yecny. She passed away in 1912 or 1913. He then married a Johanna Salaba and they farmed in the Atwater, Saskatchewan district. When he passed away in 1937, Johanna remarried and passed away in Stocholm, Saskatchewan in 1949.

Interestingly, Vaclav's youngest daughter was named Jennie Knezacek. Not sure how she got her last name. Joseph Knezacek of Atwater is mentioned on page 20 of Vaclav's file and on 23 as a "proposed sureity."

Interesting! Thank you. Those names aren't familiar to me, but I wonder if Johene is the same person in the "Treasury of Memories" local history book from the Kolin, Saskatchewan area. Kolin was formed when Bohemians settled in the area.

I found a "Joh. Salaba," along with a Sophia Yecny, from the SaskGenealogy Saskatchewan Resident Index search. "Joh." is the only Salaba on the list who I don't know about.

I have also tried searching for Mary Anne's family. Her maiden name was Slawik. The spelling varies depending on source. She was born in or around 1882 possibly in Poland.

There was a "V Salaba" on the 1911 census who lived on the same piece of land that James lived on, so it must be him. He was on the last line of the page and it listed him as married (though his wife and children are not listed), born in 1884 and came to Canada in 1904. I also have them and their family on the 1916 census, which didn't provide any information about their parents, siblings, etc.

Vaclav and James's homesteads were six kilometres apart. In the information I have about Vaclav, his name varies: James Salaba Snr. (which means that he had a son named James), Vachia, Vaclav, Vaslen, and Vaslev. ??? I have not found Vaclav or his family on a census.

As for the link on the family search site, thank you so much! I actually do have a bit of information on his homestead and what happened to it after he passed away, but this names his family members. It looks like the James I was seeking information about wasn't his son...

On pages 10 and 16, it lists his wife as Anna Salaba (she remarried shortly after), a 48-year-old son named Jim, and six daughters whose ages range from 45 to what looks like 19. James was only about 33 in 1914.

The confusing thing about Vaclav and James is that they lived so close together and both knew the same neighbour, who lived north of James and southeast of Vaclav. I know that Vaclav was born in Russia, year unknown, and in 1911, listed five members in his family: a 55 year old man, a 49 year old woman, and three girls, aged 20, 18, and 16.

I don't know what to think anymore. ???

Wow! Thank you so much for finding that!

The family did live in Poland before they lived in Canada. I searched the .pdf index for "29 May,1907" and found there were two passengers named Jeryna and Marya "Salima," who were Russian Galician, which fits with James and his family. Their birth countries/areas have been given as Russia, Poland for Mary, and Galicia. That leaves out one of the family members, probably his mother.. I can't seem to find Jeryna and Marya on the photocopy of the actual lists and I can't find the other list when searching on the Library and Archives site.  ???

Line 1. "State where person is employed" (22) is 'cheese factory.'

It was in a biography in one of those local history books. I wonder if it could have been the wrong liner.

After looking over James Sr.'s homestead files, he believed (as of 1952) that he applied for/obtained his homestead around October-November 1907, so I am assuming they arrived around that time. He obtained his homestead entry on December 2, 1907 and was naturalized in December of 1908.

Thank you, Kevin!

Heading 17 is "Chief occupation or trade" and 18 is "Employment other than at chief occupation or trade, if any." I just don't know what the bold words under 18 could be... I have looked at the other occupations on the page and the writing is more like that of the word "Farmer," so it is hard to compare letters.
