Hello there,

Sorry, I see this is quite an old post but I notice you say you're connected to a lot of canal families from the Tipton area.. Are you by any chance connected to the Broadfield boatmen from Staffordshire or the Hallfords/Alfords/Orfords from Uxbridge?

Best wishes,
Tansy :)

Ahh thank you,

Yes I guess it being in Middlesborough would make more sense as their children were born there (oops!)... and that's interesting, indeed perhaps Cannon Street is the shop :) I had a look on Google maps and it's such  a shame the area is industrial now- it would have been lovely to have seen the original location.

Ah well! :P
Thank you very much for your help :)

Best wishes,
Tansy

Durham / J H Dando Grocery Shop Durham
« on: Friday 22 April 11 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello :)

Wow, third post in my first two days of joining!

I was just wondering if anybody knows of John Henry Dando's grocery store in County Durham..

All I know is information my Grandfather has given me- that John Henry Dando (my great-great grandfather) owned  "J H Dando" grocery shop.. I'm not sure if it was "J H Dando's" or any other info.

John Henry Dando was born in 1864 in Witton Park, Auckland, Durham so I assume the shop was around this location. He died in 1926, a couple of years before my Grandad was born and I was just curious as to whether the shop or building is still there or not or what happened to it. Unfortunately I live a long way away and so am unable to visit to have a look around.

Anyway, if anybody knows of the area or shop, please do let me know, I'd be very interested to find out any info about it :)

Many thanks and best wishes,
Tansy

That's great, thank you :)

The ages and locations all seem to fit so it looks like that could be her!

There's also this marriage for a Joseph Broadfield which I think could be the family:

spouse: Sarah Edwards
marriage: 02 May 1809 — Saint Leonards,Bridgnorth,Shropshire,England

** Actually, have just realised that date would be completely out! Oops :P

Just on another quick note, Henry George was also known by his middle name as George!
