Norfolk / Re: Holroyd's 1861 census COMPLETED
« on: Sunday 03 February 13 15:32 GMT (UK)  »
From information gleaned at 2012 Who do you think you are, it appears there was a fire in the 1950's at Norwich records office(?) and many papers/records destroyed.

I will therefore complete this post.

Thanks for help given.

Cornwall / Re: Helston Wesleyan Methodist records for 1862

Thank you Osprey for your reply and very useful links.

The marriage was attended by a registrar so hopefully a copy exists. I will contact the registry office.

Cornwall / Helston Wesleyan Methodist records for 1862
« on: Tuesday 22 January 13 13:13 GMT (UK)  »
Does anyone know where the registers are kept for a marriage that took place in the Helston Wesleyan church/chapel in June 1862? I have a copy from the GRO but it is not that clear; hopefully viewing the original entry, if it still exists of course, would make sense of it.
Also the only current chapel I am aware of in Helston is in Coinagehall Street, would this have been in existence in 1862?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Re: Marriage with consent of parents
« on: Friday 11 January 13 16:06 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you Stan for your replies. I had asked the question because I have details of a marriage that took place in a register office by certificate and the bride stated her age as 23, she was in fact 20.
She was also not truthful about her late father's occupation either. However as checks were, presumably not carried out, the registrar filled in the details as given. Probably wouldn't get away with theses days though!

If the bride and/or groom were underage at marriage and didn't have parental consent, would that make the marriage void? Also what were the penalties if it was later discovered that one/both had in fact lied about their age?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Emma who?
« on: Thursday 10 January 13 21:21 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you all for your replies they are most helpful. If Emma came from a boatbuilding family that certainly fits, I will investigate further. Nicholas married Mary Paddy Trevarthen; they were both from Cornwall and Jenking, Paddy and Trevarthen were Cornish boatbuilders. After Nicholas died Mary and the two surviving sons moved back to Cornwall. Nicholas and Mary are my 3xgreat grandparents. As you can see I have attached another piece of the cert. which I feel confirms that Emma's surname does look like it begins with an N.
Once again thank you all for your help and information, it is much appreciated.

Josey as I posted my reply your revised version came up! Thank you for the information I hadn't been unable to find any Nealby/Neilby so will now look in more detail at the 1841 census. Still puzzled by Emma's prescence at the death of Nicholas though.

Thank you veeblevort "wh" is a possibility.

Thank you Mike and Josey....the third word is "fourteenth", which is the date of the death registration. Yes there is another N on the cert. for Nicholas. I will try and post that section, bear with me as I am not very good at this copying and pasting business! Will do it later when under supervision of my son.
