Radnorshire / Knighton Langford Photo Help/MI Resource
« on: Tuesday 28 January 25 19:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I believe I'm a descendant of the Langford family in Knighton.
There is this photo on the find a grave website which it would be good to get your views on:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/234929317/john-langford

What does it say? There are several names listed here, but I cannot find the burial or GRO records of the John Langford that has top billing. I see another John and Elizabeth (possibly parents?) and an Ann who I think was John juniors wife, but the text and dates don't appear to make sense.

Does anyone know of other MI available for Knighton which might help with this Langford resting place?

Many thanks
Neil

This one may be more relevant. 2 September 1966:

Many thanks, Shaun. I wonder what was deemed a suitable threshold for habitation in the 60s and how that compares to regulations today!

Lancashire / Cresswell Street, Everton
« on: Saturday 02 November 24 08:53 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
I'm researching ancestors who lived around old Reservoir Street in Everton, Liverpool, in the 1930s. It looks like this street and most of the neighbouring roads were cleared for housing developments in more recent years. That is all for a stretch of Cresswell Street. Does anyone know why this stretch of Cresswell Street survived? I'm guessing either it had better housing stock than its neighbours or wasn't subject to bomb damage. But if anyone knows the real reasons why, it will help fuel my curiosity! Many thanks, Neil

Caernarvonshire / Patronymics Patterns
« on: Friday 12 July 24 19:06 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

Looking for help on whether a particular naming pattern was conventional in Caernarvonshire in the 19th century? Whether unique to area, family, or whether names adopted varied from one person to the next!

My family was based in Aberdaron in the early 19th century. All the children appeared to adopt the given surname of their father in this instance William Evans except what could be the first son born who seems to be named Evan Williams. Is it because he was firstborn or just personal taste (as there are plenty of Evan Evans at the time?

Many thanks

The Common Room / Section 20 Hospital Admission
« on: Monday 24 June 24 22:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I'm looking at hospital (former workhouse) admission papers for a relative from the 1930s.
The "cause of seeking relief" is indicated as a "section 20". Any clues or experiences as to what that could relate to?

Many thanks

Neil

The Common Room / FAMILY HISTORY NEWS AND DIGEST - 1983 Christmas Edition
« on: Sunday 02 June 24 22:15 BST (UK)  »
I've stumbled across an image on Ancestry of a person of interest!
The name is James Faulkner b. 1818. The image and that of his family appear to be of an early photograph reproduced in a magazine. The image used on ancestry is (according to the picture owner) lifted from a poor photocopy of the article.

So a couple of questions-
(Before I contact them myself) does the Federation of Family History Societies hold copies of their old publications or even the British Library (whose online catalogue is still in recovery mode) dating back to 1983?
Does anyone have a back copy of the Christmas 1983 edition (!)? I would love to see the original article, context, and image used.

Many thanks

Neil

Cheshire / STAND OUT Burial Records
« on: Friday 19 April 24 22:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm reviewing the original burial records of St. Marys church in 1740s Lymm.
Most names appear to be listed in the same or similar handwriting/font size, but occasionally there is a name of an individual in BOLD, or Font type, than some of the neighbouring entries.

Is this down to whoever was responsible for transcribing the records on the day, or (as I suspect/hoping) is this about the standing of an individual in the community, i.e. a land owner would get headline status, whereas a mere labourer your standard entry?

All thoughts, experiences welcome as I've seen this in other burial records beyond Lymm (and Cheshire for that matter).

Many thanks
Neil

Cheshire / Re: Povar

No capital P in pavor. ?

That is so true - it does suggest something that isn't a location, doesn't it, given the context of other locations listed that do include caps.

Cheshire Parish Register Database has transcribed it as  Peov.  abbreviated.

FORENAME MARY SEX F
FATHER_FORENAME*JON SURNAME LEIGH
RESIDENCE PEOV
NAME_1*JOHN ADDITIONAL_INFORMATION*7090411 *
JOHN:JON LEIGH PEVAR

Thank you!! Is there a database of Lymm baptisms available that make sense of some of the descriptors? I have a few more that would be great to test. e.g. Peter Leigh (03 Oct 1669), Jane Leigh (Jul 1677),  and Alice Leigh (17 Jul 1680) to name a few ;)
