Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: William Varley
« on: Monday 04 August 14 12:11 BST (UK)  »
Hello Harry,

I know that your father served during the First World War and could you tell me what Regiment he was in and what his job was. With the anniversary of the war today, I have been remembering William Varley. I have him on the websit Lives of the First World War and on the WW1 Memoriam.  But dont know much about your dad, only that he was Williams son and my grandmothers brother. I hope you don't mind me asking you for this info and I hope to hear from you.

From Sheila.

WW1 In Memoriam / 19th Aug 1915, William Varley, 48, 11th Manchester Regt

Willaim Varley was my Great Grandfather. He was born in Liverpool in 1867 and had moved to Salford by 1871. He married Sarah Hannah Betney on 3rd November, 1890 in Manchester. He had 6 children, though 2 had died has babies. His occupation was a Gas Stoker at the Gasworks in Manchester. He joined up on 28th Sept, 1914 and was a Private in the 11th Manchester Regt, Service Number 9602. He was killed on the 19th Aug,1915 at Gallipoli and is remembered on The Helles Memorial, Panel 158-170. He was 47 years old when he joined up, so I understand that he must have lied about his age, because he would have been over the age limit, and he was 48 when he was killed. I am very proud of him and he will always be remembered.

Hello again Harry,

I can tell you that Fanny Varley born 1900 married James Lightfoot in 1921 and she died 1978, I do not remember ever meeting her. But I did know Lillian Varley who was born 1904 and she married Thomas Lever in 1948 and had two sons. But Thomas died in 1948 and then Lillian married Joseph Kerrigan in 1958 and I remember going to see them when they lived off Stockport Road. Lillian also was rehoused on Grey Mare Lane and she died in 1985. I have a photo of Ethel and Lillian together and I also have two photos of the Helles Memorial, one of which is a photo of the panel with William Varleys name on it. I also have a copy of his service record and a photo of him in uniform with his wife Sarah. I do know that Ashton Town Hall have information and a museum about the Manchester Regt, which William was in and I am interested in finding out what I can. But I live in Devon now, so there is not much chance of me getting up there.  I also had to help my grandson, when his home work was doing the family tree and I believe he got a good mark for it.

Can I ask, was your ex-wife called Liz? The reason that I am asking is that someone called Liz Varley got in touch with me on Ancestry a few years ago about your family and that is how I found out that my gran (Ethel) met up with her brother Harry, after many years, but she died not long after that.

Anyway Harry, best wishes for now and hope to hear from you again sometime.

Sheila.

Hi.......on my great grandfathers death cert it states that he died at 20 Nell Lane, Withington, Manchester, in 1933.  What I want to know is, does anyone know if this was a workhouse? I know that now it is part of Withington Hospital. On the 1911 census he was seperated from his wife and living at The Rest Lodging House, Factory Yard, Miller St, Manchester.   Sheila. ::)

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Roger Jones
« on: Friday 27 July 12 19:40 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for the birth of my Great grandfather Roger Jones who was born about 1874.  I think his parents were John and Harriet Jones (nee Ham). I want to get his birth cert, but I found him on 1881 and 1891 cenus and it said he was born in Manchester. But on the 1901 it said he was born in Stafford. So far I have not been lucky getting the right birth. So can anyone help please.  Sheila
