West Lothian (Linlithgowshire) / Re: George Rae and Christina Tweedie/Tweedy
« on: Tuesday 27 October 20 02:50 GMT (UK)  »
We have Rae's from Linlithgow. I am looking for the Birthplace of my James Rae bn 1779. He married Mary Ann Burgh/Bugg and had my line Thomas Rae who came to Australia. James Rae Esq was the Sheriff Substitute of Linlithgowshire. George maybe his brother and would love any connections to these people. :) thank you.

What is interesting in 1803 James Rae was a writer Tolbooth Church Edinburgh Parish. George and James have to be connected.

The Common Room / Help with Ellen Ross
« on: Monday 17 March 14 01:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hi RootsChat I really need some help with this one. I have been digging for a few years now and cannot figure this one out. My descendant Ellen Ross has no birth or death cert. I believe I am on the right path with an Ellen Ross that turned up in Braidwood District and married a John Seeley 1847 Gilston.  Ellen Seeley turns up in a Trove article a the Goulburn Police Court stating she is awaiting to go to the Benevolent Society and wins the case letting her wait in the lockup rather than go to Goulburn Gaol this is 27/9/1861. THAT'S IT  no trace of information on her afterwards and certainly no death that I can find. I haven't been able to pinpoint her coming to Australia so not even sure of age.  I have searched to The Benevolent Assylum website and her name does not show. Can anyone shed some light on where I maybe able to find further information, would greatly appreciate some insight. ???

Thanks Greg, will need all the help I can get on this one, there are so many discrpenancie and name changes it is throwing me for a loop. What I do know is my ggrandfather was Raymond Charles Ross his parents were John Joseph Ross who married Annie Tolley - thats where it starts to become a foggy. I have a marriage extract for a Joseph Tolley who married a Margaret Maria Wilson in Armidale 1873. Her status was widow (George Wilson is stated) her age 32 in 1873. Residence Cope Creek. Parents Samuel Owens and Sarah Ann Edwards - Squatter. I think we may have a connection. Is Sally the same Sally Owens that plains were named after and if so I thought her name was Sarah/ Sally Williams???

Australia / Re: Convict permission to marry

Hi I am tracing my family history which has led me here.  I am hoping this site can help me....my ancestry is the following Ronald Herbert Ross is my grandfather, his father being Raymond Charles Ross born Bear Hill - Tingha in 1892, his parents were John Joseph Ross and Annie Tolley. I believe that Annie Tolley (many variations of the first and second name) is the daughter of Joseph Tolly and Margaret Maria Owens. This is where I need help as ancestry.com is a bit confusing...I believe that Margaret is the daughter of Samuel Owen/s and Sarah Wilson. John Joseph Ross and Annie Tolley had another son Herbert who was born1889 in Herberton QLD. Would like any help or confirmation that I have the right connection to Samuel Owen/s and his wife sarah (sally).  Did Sarah (Sally) marry becoming a Stubbs? ??? Thanks in advance

Lancashire / Re: Charles Lomax - Lancashire
« on: Monday 18 April 11 01:52 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for such a quick reply, could there have been two Charles Lomax's? the State records here in NSW has Charles and Samuel on the Ship Eden 1840, but you have Charles on the Fortitude earlier very interesting. I will check again to make sure.

Lancashire / Charles Lomax - Lancashire
« on: Sunday 17 April 11 04:44 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I would be very grateful for any help and to find someone else interested in this family. My GGGGrandfather Charles Lomax bn Lancashire to John & Margaret Lomax. Not sure of birth date. Only information I have is that he came to Australia 1840 on the Ship Eden. His brother or cousin Samuel was also onboard the Eden at the same time as Charles. He may have a cousin Peter who came to Australia on the ship Albion. Charles Lomax was tried at the Lancaster Bolton QS and sentenced 10 years. Samuel was tried at the Chester Quarter Sessions.  Would love to fill in the gaps of these men as I have nothing on the family or crime.

Thanks in advance ;D
