Thank you so much for that, coincidentally just last night I fluked finding what happened to John Halford senior after finding out his daughter's married name and looking for her.  There were some transcription errors but I stumbled upon him as a widower living with his daughter in London in 1871 and there are death records for both of them within a few years.  Nice sense of closure, and thank you for the info from his son's baptism record.

Thanks so much, Sue, that Batsford is a good clue, I knew that he worked there later (as of the 1841 census) but didn't know he was living there when they got married in 1831.

Oxfordshire Lookup Requests / John Halford B. Great Rollright 1802
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 02:53 BST (UK)  »
Any help with more info about my husband's GG grandfather John Halford would be appreciated.  Here's what we know so far, some of it from the Family Search records (AFN: 177H-645)

Born about 1802 Great Rollright, Oxfordshire
Married Sarah Farbrother (b. Great Rollright about 1805)  1831

Listed as "servant" on birth certificate of son John Halford (b. Moreton in Marsh 1838, died Queensland, Australia 1919)

Listed as "servant" on 1841 census, age 40, working in rectory at Batsford Park, Shipston on Stour  (wife Sarah and children are living on their own nearby in both 1841 and 1851)

Hoping to trace his family in Great Rollright further back, and also wondering about his work as a servant, how he found his way to working at Batsford Park, and when/where he died.

Many thanks,

Margery

Thanks for all that JustKia!  The occupation probably isn't that important, I had just never seen it.  Have been trying to unravel this familly and you never know where a clue will come from.  Moses is possibly the brother-in-law of the Hannah in the 1841 listing, her husband Asher Solomons, my ancestor, had died by this time and in the future she lived in Brighton with relatives there.

Great to get your help, much appreciated.

JustKia, Thanks for your response and for putting the proper image on there--sorry, I'm new to all this.

Good suggestion about seeing what Moses did in other census years, will check it out. Yes, those other Solomons are actually my ancestors (and the address of 115 and 116 Houndsditch comes up in records I've found) and I'm trying to figure out how Moses fits into the picture.

Thanks,
Margery

Thanks for having a look at it, I was just thrown by it looking like S.N. (with a full stop after each letter) but you could well be right, don't want to read too much into it!

Thanks for the abbreviations, none seems to fit S.N. unless I'm getting the letters wrong.   To have a look at the image:
Moses Solomon, age 36, St Botolph
England 1841 census
TNA Ref H0107-0725
Image 82
Folio 3/11

Many thanks,

Does anyone know what S.N. stood for in the occupation/profession column of the 1841 census?
