Argyllshire / Re: Kilmun Burials - Help

Thank you museum man 2 for the reply and offer.

The problem is, I don't know which of my 100s of Fraser and Weir relatives are buried in Kilmun. I only have a list of those born there.

My intention was to go through the book, or at least a list, to look at names and dates and see if they fit.

I'll pm my birth's list to you anyway on the offchance some might be buried there.

Thanks again.

I have some McKay/Mackay ancestors I'd like to trace. I don't have much information on them though..

Hugh Mackay was born about 1760 and married Margaret ? They lived in Durness, Sutherland and had six sons.
John was born about 1807 and married Janet Gardiner. He was killed on the North West Frontier around 1840-2.
George was born in 1809 and married Anne Munro. He died in Australia in 1868.
Louis went to North America and we nothing else about him.
Don't know anything about the other three brothers.

I would appreciate a note if you come across them in your searches.  :)

Ref: Kilmun Monumental Inscriptions

I was thinking of buying the book listing the Kilmun Monumental Inscriptions, but am interested to know if it contains any monument inscriptions for Fraser, McGibbon, or Weir names.

Thanks in advance to anyone who has the book and can check for me.

My wife's ancestor Donald McColl was born on the 26 June 1788 in Ballachulish. We were wondering if it is possible to find if he had any brothers and sisters, and the names of his parents.

Thanks of any bits of information you might be able to find.

Thanks for the quick reply sancti.

I think the names and dates are too close for there not to be some sort of connection. My information came from a great aunt many, many years ago and should to be taken at face value.

I would be interested to see his death certificate because it may provide other useful information.

Oh well, I guess it was worth a try. The only Harkness in my tree is Janet Harkness, born abt 1750. She married Duncan Weir on 13 Jul 1775 in Inverchaolain.

Sorry, cant help with Garvlister, but I have an Ann McKellar born 1761 possibly in Kilmodan. My Ann married Donald Weir about 1780 and had 4 children.

Wonder if that is the same person.

Hi sancti

I have a John McDermid married to Margaret McNaughton c1790.

Their son Archibald was born in Ardchattan c1790. He married Mary Tyson in Muckairn 1814. Archibald died in Kilmuir 1870

I have an Archibald John McDiarmid born 5 Dec 1791 at Ardchattan who married Mary Tyson on 4 Jan 1814. My records show his parents as James McDiarmid and Mary McConnel.

I wonder if he is the same person.

Thanks for that.

The reason I ask is I've had varying results with 'family tree' type CDs. Some don't work on Windows 7, others are priced out of my reach. I got one set, 'British Isles Vital Records Index' that has 16 discs in it and so far have hardly found anything useful.
