Diane

Just another quick note.  You mentioned Ellen - born 1814.  I did not have this in my list so I've taken another look at this.  After a bit of cross referencing I think this is most likely the first wife of Uriah Whitney (elenor Jones) rather than a daughter of David & Mary.  The burial record for Llangwm shows her abode as Llangeview - and in the 1851 census (just before her death) Uriah and his wife Elenor (aged 37) were living at New Inn Langeview.  What do you think?

I certainly can't find a baptism for an Ellen Whitney or a record of her in the 1841 & 1851 census.

A copy of the Llangwm records (baptisms and burials) is on Rootsweb.com - under monmouthshire records.
Best wishes
Rob

Hi Diane
From the Whitney Research Group Home page choose "Wales" from the options under "Whitneys by location"  Then choose "Whitneys of Monmouthshire, Wales" This pulls up the long list of families.  Highlight and click on "John Whitney (b 1850 - a 1891)  There is a photo here of my Grandmother Louise.  I've also entered all of the family from John through the 1871 - 1901 census -although I have their 1911 records too.  I entered some details on his brothers too - and from this ran into  a Ralph Whitney  -  also the Gt Gt Gt gandson of David - through the same branch as myself - David b1811 - now residing out in Canada

As for additional children - no - you actually had found one more than me ! - Sarah.

On the page you'll find other records for the generation one step back   The details on David (Thomas's father) were entered, I guess, by the sites author Tim Doyle - you'll see he has not entered Davids wifes maiden names - I suppose I should update this sometime.  Tim has done a huge amount on this site.

I will now have to go and have a scout around Llangwm - its not that far for me - about 15 miles!.

Best wishes
Rob

The Govilon Village site has a great History section containing census data and monument inscriptions along with details on the history of the village.

Site can be accessed at  www.govilon.com

History pages are accessible from Home page ("History" tab) or go direct:  http://history.govilon.com/

Diana

My research matches yours !!.  Really good to know there is a link.  We are not alone though as I have had contact previously from a  descendant of John Whitney (b 1791).

David (1811) and his wife Louisa are buried (along with their son George) at St Mary's Church Rogiett.  This church sits alongside the main South Wales to London railway line just after Severn Tunnel junction - and I can't tell you how many times I've looked at the church as I've sped by on the train without realising my Gt Gt Grandparents were buried there.  Unfortunately the graves are not marked.

It appears that my branch moved increasingly west ward, moving from agricultural occupations
and into coal mining in the Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire Valleys.  If you have time to explore the Whitney resource there is a photo of my Grandparents posted.

I am no further back than you - having stalled with David.  Looks like I need to do some research in the Hereford record Office.

Best wishes
Rob :)

Hi Diana

My Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was the David Whitney of Orcop.  The line I have comes through David (b 1811) and brother to your Thomas (b 1818).  Worth taking a look at the Whitney Research Group (http://wiki.whitneygen.org/wrg/index.php/Main_Page). I've put my line on this and happy to share what I have with you. :)
