Australia / Re: Emigration to Victoria - Thomas MACKEY
« on: Thursday 07 April 11 03:30 BST (UK)  »
Sure Debra, this is the information I have so far ...

I am researching the Mackey family and Treacy Family – My 2nd Great Grandparents.  The only information I have so far is: Parents Thomas Mackey b. abt 1813 in Limerick (I’m guessing) and Bridget Treacy b. abt 1815 also Limerick (also guessing). Marriage would have been abt 1832 (although I cannot find a record).  All children born between 1833 and 1856 were baptised in Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Limerick.  Kilduff is noted as an address on one of these Baptism Records.  Have found Griffiths Valuations in 1853 for Grean, Kilduff, Limerick, Ireland in the Name of Thomas Mackey.

Would love to find more information on this couple and further information on the family history. If anyone can point me in the right direction as I live in Australia, I would really appreciate it.

The children:

•   John Mackey b. abt 1833, baptised on 20 Oct 1833 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were Patrick Treacy and Mary Kearney. No further info.

•   Catherine Mackey b. abt 1835, baptised on 1 Mar 1835 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were John Mackey and El Roche. Married William Real 6 Nov 1856 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, address is Kilduff, witnesses were Patrick Ryan and Margaret Treacy no parents names listed. Emigrated to Australia in abt 1857. Both passed away in Victoria, Australia. Had 7 children.

•   Patrick Mackey b. abt 1837, baptised on 13 Aug 1837 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were Edmond Treacy and El Dwyer. No further info.

•   Daniel Mackey b. abt 1842, baptised on 3 Apr 1842 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were William Mackey and Margaret Mackey. Emigrated to Australia in 1862 On board the Ocean Empress with brother William. Occupation: Farm Labourer. Married Bridget Nicholson in 1864 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Lived in NSW Australia. Passed away in 1874 Victoria, Australia.

•   William Mackey b. abt 1845, baptised on 18 Apr 1845 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were DI Mackey Ca Mackey (abbreviated). Emigrated to Australia in 1862 On board the Ocean Empress with brother Daniel. Occupation: Farm Labourer. Lived in NSW Australia.

•   Bridget Mackey b. abt 1850, baptised on 9 Dec 1850 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were John Mackey and Ca Mackey (abbreviated). No further info.

My Grandfather was Thomas Mackey, he was born abt 1853 in Kilduff, Co Limerick. He was baptised on 24 April 1853 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were Patrick Mackey and Mary Treacy. He emigrated to Australia between 1880-1882.  Married Bridget Christina Burns on 1 May 1882 in St Mary's, Echuca, Victoria, Australia. They had 9 children. He passed away in 1926 at Essendon, Victoria, Australia.

•   Edmond Mackey b. abt 1856, baptised on 20 Apr 1856 at Pallasgrean & Templebredon, Co Limerick, Ireland and Godparents were Patrick MacKey and Bridget Ryan. Emigrated to Australia in 1873 On board the Great Britain. Married Julia Ann Blanchfield Briscoe in 1881 Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. Had 8 children.  Passed away in 1906 Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia.

Any information anyone might have on this family would be very welcome.  I am also quite happy to share any information I have.

Kindest Regards,
Penny

Hi Trevor,

Firstly I would just like to thank you for all the research you are doing for me, I really appreciate it. Even putting up with my typing errors, you are good, lol!

HMS Victory was the main port in Portsmouth, England at the time, it may have included this sister port in Vancouver.

Yes, I too have many of these links about the Trollope, one of the two ships he was on that got torpedoed (also have info on the other one). Talkl about bad luck, good luck to have survived. I have this pic. and other information.  I also emailed the list last year with my Dad's details, I see they haven't added him yet, will email them again. I also note a story attached to one of the guys listed that he sustained head injuries and was taken back to England., I guess it depends on which boat picked them up from the water and where it was heading, as Dad said there were a number of boats all over the place picking up survivors.

The reason my Dad wa happier to be in Vancouver was because of the distance (they were actually physically closer at the time) and a retired surgeon who was a Specialist in Dad's type of injury had just started back at work because of the war (great timing), Dad believed he saved his leg.

If you google "snowy mountains hydro-electric power scheme" you will find out all about it.  Basically Australia imported many people from all walks of life after the war to work on this huge project.  Many did not need any documentation to support who they were, but if you were a British Subject you had to have the correct Legal Documentation.  It was an amazing and dangerous project for it's time.

Thanks once again.

Best Wishes
Penny

Hi Trevor,

Thank you for the copy of the image, I received it fine.

His service records states the following:
Carolina (Trollope) 29 May 1944 to 6 July 1944 (last ship he was on - Normandy Invasion)
Victory 7 July 1944 to 23 June 1946 Physically unfit for Naval Service (I believe this was when he was in Canada.

It says nothing about Canada, yet many of the injured were taken to Canada being in the Atlantic.  His routed was England to the US.  My father use to say it was lucky that he ended up in Canada as he probably would have lost his leg if he had to wait to go back to England.  He underwent surgery and also physio there.

My mother believes that he told her he arrived in Australia in 1947 by jumping ship deciding that this was the place he wanted to stay he got everything legitimised so he could work on the Snowy Mountain Scheme (abt 1950) and then the VIC Railways a few years later.

So whether he decided to go back to England, save for his fare and return in 1949, I'm not sure.  He didn't seem the type of man to lie about these things, so it's quite interesting.

But as we all know looking into this Ancestry business, it's amazing what skeletons you find :).

Best Wishes
Penny

Hi t mo (Trevor),

I don't have access to find my pass, only ancestry and GR.  The only reason I said it may be Canada is because he was injured during WW2 a boat he was on was torpedoed and he almost lost his leg and ended up in Vancouver for about 12 months, so I wasn't sure whether he went back to England or not. Also I though maybe he arrived via the U.S., just wasn't sure.

Again thank you so much.

Regards,
Penny

Hi Dundee (Debbie) and t mo (Trevor),

Thank you so much, you have no idea how long I have been searching for this information.  I already have his service record, so thank you so much on heads up on where to find it.

But the details you have for 1949 seem to be spot on, he did live at 80 Leyton Rd, in Wimbledon SW19 and he was a Painter by Trade. Where did you find the emigration record or was it also on the National Archives site?

Kindest Regards,
Penny

Hi, Look-up Request Please.
My father George Charles Cole (now deceased), b. 2 Nov 1925, Kingston, Surrey, England.  Royal Navy WW2. Came out to Australia after WW2, may have come from England or Canada, pretty sure he went back to England after being in Canada, may have also arrived via the U.S.  Believe the period was between 1945 and 1952 (when he married my mother in Victoria, Australia).  Apparently he jumped ship, but I have no idea which ship or whether it was the first ship he actually came out to Australia on.  He did work on the Snowy Mountain Scheme in NSW before he married my Mum.  He was a Painter and Decorator by trade. I'm sorry I have no other information to narrow this down.

Kindest Regards,
Penny

Australia / Emigration to Victoria - Thomas MACKEY
« on: Tuesday 05 April 11 09:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I need a look-up please.
My Great Grandfather Thomas MACKEY b. abt 1853 Kilduff, Co Limerick, Ireland, emigrated to Australia between abt 1870 and 1882, ending up in Victoria.  I believe he emigrated as an adult (near) and may have arrived with siblings. Unmarried I think as he married in Australia in 1882 (which I know is not always the case).  Other siblings of his also emigrated to NSW and Victoria and different times.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Kindest Regards,
Penny
