Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Father's occupation
« on: Friday 08 August 25 21:43 BST (UK)  »
I am assuming he is a Clerk at Gordon’s miln Company.
Is that what you mean?

If you search, ‘miln’ or ‘mylne’ is an old word for ‘ mill’.

Other searches show references to Gordon’s in this context.
See page 15 here:

‘Another bleach field advertisement in 1759 for the Gordon’s Milns Company …’

Many thanks for that. I was unsure if "miln" was an abbreviation for something or even if I was misreading it. If Robert and Helen Nicol is the correct couple his occupation in 1759 and 1764 is a weaver in Perth. Being a Clerk and a reasonably senior one in Aberdeen, if I am taking this correctly, didn't seem to match. I suppose if the company is a fabric mill, which newspapers seem to suggest, it is possible.... :-\ The number of variations of spelling for any Robert and Helen Nicol couple I can find is not helping!

Thanks again to you and emeltom

Argyllshire / Re: Catholic school or college, Dunstaffnage, near Oban?
« on: Tuesday 06 May 25 00:19 BST (UK)  »
Like everyone else I can't find a reference to a catholic boarding school/ college near Dunstaffnage. I did wonder if the school concerned was St Augustus Abbey which was run by the Benedictine's and did exist at the time in question. It was in the general area of Dunstaffnage (~74 miles according to google). That does leave the problem of where the Dunstaffnage name comes from though.

The Highland Archive Centre might have more documents that could help. They have always been very friendly when I visited so might be worth an email?

I have a photo of my aunt in June 1938, at age 8, wearing a remarkably similar bridesmaid dress to the young girl on the left hand side.

There is actually only one death entry (reference 607/ 429   Glasgow, Martha St) and it has both her married names on it so it will show up whichever names you use to search  :)

Scotland / Re: Scotlands People Essential Maintenance on 23 Nov 2022
« on: Monday 28 November 22 23:07 GMT (UK)  »
I have a Scotlands People Newsletter from August 2022. There could have been a more recent one but I can't be sure (the next most recent in my email is June 2021 and I do know there were some in between those dates which I obviously haven't kept).

It is so long ago I haven't a clue how or when I registered for the newsletter. I have two accounts and at one point I remember getting two copies of the newsletter every time it came out. I don't recollect that happening recently ???

It might be quicker to dispute the charge via your credit card

It might also have a better long term effect. If a lot of people have to claim back for double charges and so on the credit card companies will get unhappy. They are likely to have more clout than us mere users if they complain to iron mountain. Definitely woth a try anyway.
