Perhaps it was Wiltshire rather than Westshire???  (Wiltshire is a county in the south.)

Boston would naturally come to mind, however many people traveled via Canada.  Canada did not impose as many restrictions on those coming from Britain / Ireland as the US did at that time.  Perhaps your ancestor landed in Quebec City or Montreal and went via land to the US.

Good luck!

Hello;
I have an ancestor who was stationed in Limerick in the early - mid 1860's with the 73rd Regiment of Foot.  His name was William Higgins.
Does anyone know where these barricks stood, or even if they are still there?
Thanks for your help.

Can anyone help me?  I am looking for details of the Higgins family in Galway circa 1830's.  Family lived around Kinvara / Gort.  If listed in Griffith's Valuation, would I be able to get actual land records from the Irish Government?  Is there any way to find out family members?
(Can you tell I am a beginner???.. sorry!)
Thanks for your help.

Christopher;
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know if all military marriages were registered with either the church or civil authority?

Thanks again.

Ireland / Marriage Trouble
« on: Thursday 14 April 05 17:32 BST (UK)  »
Hello;
Can anyone out there help...?  An ancestor of mine was in the British Army in the mid-1800's.  We know he was married while in the Army, and we know to who he was married, and we know the date the army noted the marriage.  However, we cannot seem to find any official registration or marriage certificate.  We would like to find this marriage certificate in order to find out his fathers name.  Being born in Ireland, there is no record of his birth.  Any advice?
Thanks for your time.
Here are the details if you are interested...

William Higgins
Born approx. 1830 in Kinvara, Galway
Served in the 73rd Regiment of Foot from 1847 - 1869
Married Sarah Soper
Had a son, William, born in Limerick 1866
