The Lighter Side / Re: certicate delivery time?
« on: Wednesday 13 September 06 16:02 BST (UK)  »
I phoned GRO today.
They said that they did not encounter any problems with my request and were at a loss as to why they had not been received. The lady I spoke to said duplicates would be sent to me ASAP.

Sounds hopeful  ???

The Lighter Side / GRO certificate delays?
« on: Wednesday 13 September 06 10:51 BST (UK)  »
I orded two certificates from the GRO 31 Aug and was given an estimated despatch date of 6 Sept. I am still awaiting said certificates. I understand there may be delays now with the current series of WDYTYA showing, but this order predates the first programme.

Is anyone else experiencing delays? Thought I would ask before I contact GRO.

Thanks - Tony

Armed Forces / Egypt 1946
« on: Thursday 07 September 06 09:01 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to trace my grandads (Arthur Stuart Curtis dob 28/5/1906) war history and  trying to ascertain which regiment he was in.

The only clues I have are:
He was in Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt 1946.
He looked after POW's
A small photo contains a reference to V.D.U Disposal.

From this limited info, can anybody help me  ???

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Re: lost street?
« on: Thursday 31 August 06 08:16 BST (UK)  »
I had some additional people interpret the lettering on the certifcate and without any prompting, all of them reckon it states N9. It appears I am the only one who read it as W9  >:(

With ths and the previous Rootschatter responses I guess I will have to hold my hands up in defeat and accept N9. I will however, check the sub-district as suggested  :)

Thanks - Tony

Bit of a long shot this, but here goes.

Does any Rootschatter happen to have any photographs of Station Crescent, Tottenham they would be willing to share?

The certificate was ordered from the GRO.

My traceable ancestors originated from the Kensington/Notting Hill area of London (including the person and witness on the death cert).

I know that some family migrated across London ultimately settling in the Tottenham area. So I guess that either W4 or N9 cannot be ruled out  :-\
