There is nothing of any interest in that 1940 attestation record - just name, number, and date of death.

Thanks Shaun, you've saved me a couple of bob.

Hi Hillhurst,

I've just had quick look at FindMyPast and could see just two records for 1940 but I have no access. This date of 1940 makes sense because he joined the 85th Anti-Tank which was formed in Sep 1941. So, I think he must have enlisted in to a different unit prior to joining the 85th.
Thanks again
Phil

Hi Phil - His enlistment year may have been 1940. Find My Past have a 1940 record (with image) for your Robert Bird in the Royal Artillery Attestations 1883-1942 collection. These records often list the soldier's home address and occupation at time of enlistment.

Hi Hillhurst,

Thanks for the reply. Do you know what type of record this is on Find My Past? I'm signed up to 'Ancestry" website but not FindMyPast. It's gets expensive when you subscribe to more than one.
Cheers
Phil

Could anyone help with finding when my relative, Robert Bird, enlisted please, service number 1114619?
He joined the 85th Anti Tank Regiment Royal Artillery. Does his service number indicate when he joined? He died in Singapore on the 15th February 1942.

Armed Forces / Re: List of all Battle of Waterloo men - free lookup offer
« on: Saturday 25 September 21 15:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi,Phil,
The only information I have is probably the same as you already have - that he was born in Dudley in 1791. He married 'Mary Onions' on 11th March 1811 at St. Thomas church, Dudley and they were to have seven children.  I have his death being - 16th May 1838 at Dudley, West Midlands.
There were only two men on the Waterloo Medal Roll with this name - the other man was born in Malden, Essex and served with the 3rd Battalion 1st Foot Guards, but can't be your man, as he was killed at Waterloo. So you have the right man.
Also as you have stated - his Waterloo medal was sold at Fellows Auction in July 2013, for £2041.
I have checked The Public Records Office at Kew and they have no service paper papers.  I am sorry - but this is all I have.
Regards  Ed

Hi Ed,

Thanks for the quick response. You are right with the details about Daniel and his family. I did have the same conclusion from another source who was an archivist for the Coldstream guards and he said "it is probably true he is a Waterloo Man". I was still hoping to have that bit of information that would prove without doubt he was a Waterloo Man.

Thanks again, Phil

......  I could probably help some of the people requesting information on service at Waterloo.

Hello simpleboy,

I posted this request some time ago without any reply so I was wondering if you could please help with any information about my relative who maybe a Waterloo man?

To repeat my request...

His name is Daniel Finch born 1791 in Dudley, West Midlands, he's my 5 x Great Uncle. He may be the same Daniel Finch who was a Private with the 2nd Regiment of Foot, Coldstream Guards, in Lieutenant Colonel Henry Dawkin's Company.

I have found a couple of records that mention a Daniel Finch of the same age being present at Waterloo.
I've also found a record for a "Waterloo medal" in the name of Daniel Finch which was sold in 2013.

Daniel's first daughter Elizabeth and his first son Alexander were born 1814 and 1821 respectively and on their baptism record they have their father's occupation as "Soldier".

Could anyone please tell me where I might find more information? Such as a service number, place of birth or parents name, anything that might identify him as my relative from Dudley.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Phil

Piecing together the information from other threads, connected to this one, I have drawn this chart to show pictorially the family tree. If there are any mistakes please let me know.

There is another thread connected to this which shows another family tree, click on link below...
