London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Re: Andrew (Jack) Carson
« on: Saturday 22 October 11 22:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi Liam,

Andrew/Jack was my mother in laws uncle. He was born in Cape Town South Africa April 5, 1894 as Andrew Scholtz. He died in London in 1972.
When he joined the circus he changed his name to Jack Carson.
There is a cousin in England Medland Reynolds that has the family bible with all sorts of info in it but so far we haven't been able to make contact with him.
When Jack was alive he used to visit Medland's mom Sylvia in England...she was his cousin.
I had given the research a break for a few months as it was consuming my life... maybe I should carry on with it again.

Hi Daisy,

From what I know James was born around 1880 and died in 1931 in Cape Town, South Africa.
It seems that he was born in Cape Town.
They did spell their name as MULVIHAL.
All the info that I have found indicate that the MULVIHAL family went to SA mid 1800's as I have found the deaths of Thomas and Ann (Hackett - his wife) MULVIHAL in 1862 & 1863.

Am still waiting for my mother in law to visit the Woltemade cemetery in Maitland, Cape Town. She said it is not that safe to go there so has to rely on others to go with her.
Once she has been I should know more.  ;)

Thanks
Jennifer

Andrea, when I spoke to her yesterday she said she did have them at one time but cannot find them now. Am sure they are in the house somewhere  ;)
Have also asked her to go to the cemetery in Cape Town as this might give more info!
Totally agree having their correct names etc would be such a big help!
Will continue to look up things.

Thanks everyone :)
I have no idea how old Thomas jr was - it only stated thomas jr.

Did also see the other Thomas Mulvihal on the ship in 1903.....maybe this is the one I am looking for  :-[
This is my mother in laws family that I am looking into for her. Her dad (James Mulvihal) died when she was about 4.
All she knows is that they came from Ireland and that James was born in South Africa.
thanks
Jen

Family History Beginners Board / where was the mother?

On Thursday August 25th 1881 the Kinfauns Castle departed from London to Cape Town South Africa with Mr Thomas MULVIHAL and his son Thomas on board. There was no mention of any wife? Would it be possible that she went on another ship? I looked up every ship that I could find without finding any other member of the family.
Anyone know where else to look?

Hi Ian,

I have been doing research on my husbands and my family and your enquiry came up about Andrew (Jack) Carson.
After reading all your details on him to my mother in law (in south Africa)...she said yes, that does sound like him. Andrew was her uncle.
We know he was in the circus...have photo's of him dressed up like "Buffalo Bill". He was in India and did finally live in London where he died.
His real name was Andrew Scholtz and he changed it to Jack Carson at some stage
His parents were: Jacobus Johannes Banto SCHOLTZ and Elizabeth Jacoba Berrindina (nee Hurling) SCHOLTZ.
his siblings were: Annie, Christina Georgina, Elizabeth Jacoba, Henry and Andrew SCHOLTZ.
Hope this proves to be helpfull.
