Hi Vicwinann,

Thanks for your mail.  I will certainly keep you in mind should my Thomas  be linked to James and Sarah.  I think I have a few more hours research and chat to aradgick about what he/I have found to date to see whether we are talking about the same Thomas, especially about his birth.  Probably get that certificate to see whether it ties up with any info I have or is posted above.

Best wishes and may be in touch soon.

Hello Cardiff,

Thank you so much for your replies.  Yes, it is David and not Daniel in 1891 census as you suspect. I see where you are coming from re Mary's age etc. and am in the process of trying to find out Marys parents so can see on previous census whether age is roughly the same, although as we all know that ages on census records are taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise.  At least +/- 2-3 years.

Thanks again and if receive anything in the meantime on Mary will let you know.

Thanks again for your time.

Monmouthshire / Mary Richards nee Jones c1865

My aunts great grandmother Mary Richards nee Jones was born around 1865 in Aberdare, Glamorgan.
She married John Richards in Siloh Chapel, Tredegar in 1885 and had 3, possibly four children and died before 1901 census.

Can anybody assist me with the following questions at all please?

1.  Have not been able to find any death record for Mary Richards between 1891 and 1901

2.  Had three children, Jonah, David and Mary Hannah, but I believe may have had a fourth John Richards c 1898 as I believe husband married again around 1907 to Ellen Jenkins and in 1911 census John Richards pops up, but have been unable to find any record of him in 1901 census etc.

Many Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Hi CaroleW,

Yes sorry, finger trouble as usual she was born around 1889 according to 1911 census records and also her marriage certificate details back this up.  I will give all details from marriage to David Richards below, but no Evans as witnesses I am afraid.

Here goes:

Bedwelty district Registry Office:  On 1st June 1909

Mary Hannah Evans (I think it was Hannah as her middle name) aged 19yrs and spinster with fathers name William Evans (Deceased) coal miner. Address at marriage 3 Morgans Row, Rhymney, Monmouthshire.

Married

David Richards aged 20 yrs and Bachelor with fathers name of John Richards also a coal miner.  Address at marriage 35 Bryn Seion Street, Rhymney, Monmouthshire.

Witnesses - Henry Howard Greenhouse and Hannah Maria Beddoe

I think that is everything.

John

Hi Carole,

Just thought would update you. Went back in 1911 census but for 35 Bryn address this time and think his father John Richards still lives there. but with a new wife.  Has given a couple of other siblings also and a new step child too.  I am getting there gradually, thanks to your help.

Many thanks again.

Hi Trish, thanks for replies.  So it is Susan on both 1881 and 1891 census records, correct?

The witnesses at Thomas and Harriett's marriage were Thomas Isaiah Cooper and it looks like Maria Dyson.  Thomas Isaiah Cooper is Harriett's elder brother by about 9 years, but have not at present found out who Maria Dyson is.

Can I do anything if you point me in a direction?  Only I don't mean for everyone to do my research for me just need other points of view to see if can finally track my GGF and move onwards down the Glew line which will be lovely and a surprise to my mum (Glew) also.  I did track down some Glew cousins, but they have stopped communicating and not answering any of my communications which is a shame, as we were going to set a date to meet up and collect all our data into one pot, but it seems to have died a death unfortunately.

Thanks again.

Thank you both, Dannemois and Osprey for your valuable contributions.  This Bute Town, Brithdir in Gelligaer region sound very plausible, especially as I think it is in Glamorgan at time of 1901 etc. which will be good as the other Bute Town near Rhymney to north of town I think is in Monmouthshire just the other side of the river Rhymney which I think divides the then counties.

The two are only about 10 miles apart up/down the valley to each other which also make sense for the two people to meet each other etc.

Thank you both for info especially census records, although I wasn't asking for you to do the work for me, was just trying to ascertain whether there was another Bute Town in Glamorgan other than one in Cardiff and you all have answered my questions.

Also I think in 1911 census they may have put Bute Town, Cardiff if Cardiff was the birthplace rather than further north.

Thank you so much all.  It is fascinating especially when you do not know the area and a few options come about from your research and require some assistance to unravel the details.

Wow, you do have to look outside the box don't you!!  Thank you Trish and momo22 for replying and yes, on marriage cert. Thomas father is listed also as Thomas which when I searched like Trish I came up blank.

If Thomas was born in Bursted, surrey then believe it would probably come under Reigate district, but have had a quick look on BMD but come up with nothing with Glew/Glue and thomas spelt a  number of different ways too.

It has certainly I think possed a few more questions than answers with your data Trish, but it is how it will be interpreted will perhaps hold the key.

Not sure what to make of 1881 & 1891 census as does seem to be links between Buxted, Sussex and living in Sunninghill, Berkshire. Also is it the same Mark Turner?  As born different places too!!

I do produce some headaches!!!   ;)

Any takes on the situation?

Thanks again to you both for your assistance.

Berkshire / Glew Family - 1901 Easthampstead

My GGF Thomas Glew and family lived in Easthampstead/Sunninghill until his death in 1919. CWGC in Easthampstead churchyard.

I have his marriage and details in 1901 and 1911 census records, but in 1891 can not find at all and have been all over the place trying to find his birthdate and birthplace as he has put down different ones in both 1901 and 1911 census records.  I found from his small amount of army records that still survive that his birthplace most likely is Chichester and not ones on census records.

Even with this new info still have not been able to track him or his parents down at all.  This may lead to him possibly being illegitimate as he has covered his tracks well so far.

Thomas married Harriett Cooper in July 1900 and had 8 children up to 1916.  He was born around 1875/6

It is becoming quite a chore now as it is stopping me going back in time on the Glew side, the only dead end so far on my tree.

If anybody has any info on the Glew family that lived in Easthampstead, I would love to hear from you.

Thanks for any assistance.

John
