CaroleW thanks for that link, that helps a lot. Probably won't know why he changed his name halfway through his life, unless he had been a naughty boy with the law! Thanks again for your time and help.

Thanks for your reply. The only thing that puzzles me is why swap and change between names and why have his family keep swapping and changing?

Lancashire / Conufusion over using two names Eckersley/Marsh

Hi all,

Hit a little bit of a brick wall with the Eckersleys in my family tree. I have Benjamin and Ellen Eckersley both born about 1820 in Wigan. So far I have that they have five children, William, Rachel, Nancy, Paul and Elizabeth.

A lot of family trees on ancestry seem to suggest that Benjamin's father is Samuel Eckersley, but none of these trees have any evidence and it is contrary to the little information I have found.

I used familysearc.org and found that Benjamin married Ellen Peters in Wigan in 1842. However the record is for a Benjamin Eckersley but his father is down as Thomas Marsh.

Now where it gets strange is that all the kids are known under the name Eckersley and I can only see a census record for 1871, all the above children, Benjamin and his wife Ellen are there under the name Eckersley. In 1891 Ellen, her son William and Williams children are living together under the name Eckersley (presumably Benjamin is deceased around this time, I have been unable to find a death record).

Now whats even stranger is in the 1861 census I have found Benjamin, Ellen and all the children living together but under the surname Marsh! The birth places and DOB's are matching.

I cannot get my head round why his father is down as thomas marsh and he is down as Eckersley on the marriage record. I then cannot get my head round why all his kids are Eckerlsey but for a certain period of time they provide their surname of Eckersley before returning to the name Eckersley (presumably after Benjamin died).

If anyone can help I would be very grateful.

Hi Jim,

How did you find all this out?

Do you mean that Sarah Edwards could have had a trelationship with Richard Wilcox which resulted in Hannah? She has then taken the name Burt when Thomas and Sarah married?

Thank you very much for your help Jim, really appreciate it. If you ever need anything looking up in the north west, let me know!

Hi All,

Have been researching my family tree and visited the liverpool archives the other week. This helped me with something I was stuck on. I was researching the Burt family tree. and found out that Thomas Burt's father was Thomas Birt (now on the parish records, the father is spelt Thomas Birt but the son is spelt Thomas Burt. it looks like someone has been writing Birt in the grooms part but has then corrected it to Burt).

Thomas Burt married Sarah Edwards in liverpool, St Phillips in 1837. Their fathers Thomas Burt and Edward Edwards were recorded on the document as 'dead'.

Thomas was born 1811 - 1816 according to the census, but marriage certificate suggests 1813 which we believe is correct. He was born in Birmingham. He worked as a post office clerk in liverpool and died there in 1870. He had three children maybe more but not found them) hannah, thomas and william.

I think I may have found record of his birth on familysearch which suggests he was born 1813 at St phillips, Summer Street, Birmingham, Warwickshire and lists his father as Thomas Burt and Margaret Burt.

I just wondered if anybody has any info that could confirm this or visiting the birmingham archives any time soon?

I am due to be visiting the liverpool and the preston (to cover liverpool and lancashire) archives in the forseeable future so if you require anything looking up there and cannot make it yourself, please message me and i will have a look for you!

Well I visited the archives and managed to find the marriage certificate Was strange seeing their signatures. I discovered that Thomas's dad was called Thomas. His second name is spelt Birt but his son (who got married) is spelt Burt (it looks like they were writing Birt but then corrected it but not the dads spelling of the second name). Thomas's dad had died before the wedding so was not present.

Sarah's father was called Edward. So he was Edward Edwards :D
He was also dead before the marriage.

And thats where I have become stuck. Not sure where to go from here, warwickshire does not seem to have a searchable opc like the liverpool and lancashire one.
