Glamorganshire / Irish immigrants to Wales, 1800s
« on: Monday 09 April 12 23:32 BST (UK)  »
I have two families of Irish ancestors who travelled to Wales and both ended up in Newport, Monmouthshire.  I have been fortunate enough to build quite a family tree for both sides.

On Grandfather's maternal side: Fitzgerald = came from Cork (going back to 1829) and left between 1865-1868, first appearing on Welsh Census in 1871.

On Grandfather's paternal side: Murray as yet unknown location (in Ireland) of departure, as yet unknown date of departure, first appearing on Welsh Census in 1851, but GG-Grandfather born in Newport in 1845/ 1849.

I have read much of what they must have endured through their lives in Ireland; and I believe that is what helped them to survive the terrible journeys that they had to make to find better lives.  I am in admiration of their hardiness and am thankful that they undertook this.  Their drive is what has contributed to the good life of myself and their other descendents, and I'm proud of them for that.

United States of America / Fowke, Cyril and Leslie

I'm looking for any information on these two: Cyril Fowke (b. 1903) and Leslie Fowke (b. 1906, Deseronto, Hastings, Ontario, Canada).  Their parents were Henry Fowke and Ellen Elizabeth Howe.

To date I have that they had an older sister: May.  Cyril died in 1980, and Leslie died in 1971 in Orange, California, USA.  They seem to have been quite musical/ artistic with Violin, Piano and eventually becoming 'Vaudeville Artists'.

Where did they go from there?

I don't need on-line Census information from search-sites though, because I have access to several and believe I have found all possible: Census, Emigration (to Canada), and Border Crossings (Canada-USA).

I also have a family photo album and believe several photos are from the Fowke family in Canada.  I would like to find a source who can confirm this, and even possibly identify some.

Monmouthshire / Re: Fitzgerald and Sexton in Newport

I'm quick because I'm very actively pursuing my family history. My mum is 70+ now and her elder sister (the Aunt mentioned before) is not in best health, so I thought it'd be nice to give some info on the Sextons as she enjoyed time with Lena.

If you had any info on the Fitzgerald side in respect of your Great-Grandmother, this would be welcomed too as I've struggled to find much regards many of them.

I'm coming to conclusion that I'm probably related (distantly) to much of Newport population. My mum's paternal grandparents' families (Fitzgerald and Murray) both came from Ireland and settled for long time in Newport.

I too went to visit Newport for the first time this year - only just back in March - and met with a 4th cousin. As you say.... interesting place!  Regards J

Hi, that's fabulous! It'd be great to get ur info.  Thx.

Your Grandfather is a 'First Cousin Once Removed' of my mother - Michael's mother (Mary Fitzgerald) is a sister of my mum's grandmother.  This may seem a bit of a 'loose' relationship, as only associated by marriage through Mary; however, my Aunt enjoyed a lot of her childhood being welcomed by 'Auntie' Lena (Michael's sister) and her husband, whom I understand became Mayor of Newport.

If ur on Genes R, then u should be able to pick me up (via family tree) I think to email me from there.  Then I can send u my direct email.  Sorry if that seems convoluted, but I don't like giving out my contact on public forums.  Many thanks.

Jacqui

Yes, Suz, Michael Snr was a Driver in Royal Artillery, but later became a labourer (Wharf Labourer)
Mary is listed separately as 'Soldier's wife'.  I've also already got his 1902 death in Newport.

I'll look into the service record you mention for Michael Jnr. as this wouldn't be surprising and he was born in Newport, Monmouthshire. Thx.

No hits on GenesReunited yet for Sexton and only incorrect matches for Fitzgeralds so far.

The John Fitzgerald residing with the Sexton's I did find and I believe that's a brother of James.
