You have the birth name of his first wife Mary, down as Crookham. I thought her birth name was Bew. Could you confirm it for me. All the dates are correct, so I just wonder if,  perhaps, she was born by one name and took another later (perhaps a stepfather?).

No, Crookham wasn't shown as Mary's name, but her place of birth as given in the 1851 census.  Crookham Common is adjacent to Thatcham.

The additional notes were compiled from parish registers and census returns, where available, so are subject to the usual errors, misunderstandings and lies!  ;D  You should enjoy the little book with its scurrilous remarks, and you'll find some more Rumbles in there too, as well as the Deacons.

I would be looking in the Thatcham PR for the missing son, probably the eldest.  It was common for a woman to go home to her mother to have her first child, so he may have been baptised there too.

Thanks for clearing that up.   ;D

Hi,

The only baptisms from East Ilsley PRs (ex BFHS) that I can see with parents John & Mary are these;
22-12-1822 Charles RUMBLE s/o John & Mary, lab.  (b.13-10)
25-12-1825 Isaac         "         "     "           "      "
4-3-1829     John          "         "     "           "      "
plus George which you already have.
Hope these help.

Hi Alan, thanks for your help.  That's another box ticked on the Rumble Family Tree checklist! ;)

Bit confused by your reply, Sloegin.

Didn't know he remarried after Marys death. That's a turn up! Thanks for that  :)

The family tree is beginning to make sense. I have quite a lot of names and dates for later (1800's) members of the Rumble family and being able to associate them with all the names forwarded to me has been really helpful.
Can I impose further and ask help in finding the children of John Rumble 1794-1864 and Mary Bew 1789-1852. Mary was born in Thatcham, Berks and they were married there on 13th Nov. 1814. I believe they lived in East Ilsley because I have the date of birth of one child, George Rumble born in East Ilsley in 1819.  He married:
1.Charlotte Deacon (I have no other information on her)
2.Charlotte Greenaway 1826-1866.
George and Charlotte married on 30 Nov. 1848 at 'The Meeting House' Reading, Berks.
Thanks.

The registers for East Ilsley start 1608 and I cannot see a  RUMBLE  enrtry before the 1738 marriage of Giles and Elizabeth Prior-there are some in the 1700s and LOTs  in the 1800s !

Thanks for taking the trouble to check for me. Much appreciated.

Giles and Mary were married 19th May 1757
Wit=William Deacon/Joanna Curtis

Rumble/Rumball/Rumbald/Rumbell/Rumbold !!

Children of Giles & Mary baptised at E/Ilsley
16 Oct 1757-John
29 May 1759-Sarah
03 May 1761-Thomas
07 jul 1764-William
gap
27 Feb 1780-Mary

This may have been a second marriage for Giles, as there is also
1738  Oct 16  Giles RUMBALL & Elizabeth PRIOR, botp

They have
1739     23 Sep  Giles (buried 5 May 1740)
1743     15 Nov  Bettes
1746/7  15 Feb  Henry
1749       4 Jun  Giles

Elizabeth RUMBALL was buried Sep 23 1751

That is so interesting. I wondered whether there may be children from the previous marriage. It's nice to have it confirmed. Thanks for your help.

Thank you all so much for your help. Is there any way to find out about the parents of Giles Rumble 1690-1761?
Any idea how far the parish registers go back? It may be, I suppose, that his parents were born in a different parish.  Any help would be brilliant, thanks : :)
